Drug cheats take ghb, steroids and IMO caffeine and red bull/other energy drinks, but that's a debate for another day
Ecstasy is just a white trash pill in my opinion on par with pot and alcohol, but again that's a debate for another day
Legality isn't what concerns me, performance enhancing, speed is the only illegal drug I know of that would enhance performance

Well I must disagree strongly with those who say that XTC is not performancing. Firstly can you say exactly what was in the "XTC" pills that Joey took? I bet he can't. some are filled with speed, some coke some even Heroin. I have played sports all my life and i have seen XTC close up for a long period of time(read that how you will) and some of the effects do include prolonged periods of hyper-energy, faster reactions and being able to think and undersrtand normal things in a new light and from other angles. Some days Im sure that his recrational drug use was a hinderance but I believe that it would have enhanced his performance more than we choose to believe. To say that his pill popping absoluteley did not affect his performance positively is taking a narrow view.

Johns was the best. Anyone who believes that cocaine or dancing pills improved his performance is probably taking the stuff themselves. A foolish comment.
He may say some silly things at times but the guys knowledge is priceless. A great coup for the club and I'm sure DCE and Foz will be the better for it.
Life's about making mistakes. It's not as if he's a repeat offender like Cousins or Carey. And as for Matt Johns or Geyer wtf is their credibility and why care about the crap they serve.

He was the best of his time yes thats true. But to say that he never got benefit from taking illegal drugs is in my opinion a little foolish and un-educated on the matter.

Unless I'm missing something johns got done with e. And I realise that these things contain different things but i dont think he took them with the objective of improving performance. E's and that other rubbish may enhance some skills. I just don't think rugby league skills are amongst them. Dancing and playing music yes but not rugby league.

Andrew Johns revealed, live on the Footy Show, that he had regularly taken ecstasy throughout his playing career, mainly during the off-season. He claimed he had suffered from depression and bi-polar disorder and the drugs helped him in dealing with the high level of psychological 'pressure' associated with his career as an elite sportsman.
In a manic state, individuals have ‘extraordinary levels of stamina and a tireless capacity for sustained concentration’.
In April 2008 the then NSW Treasurer, Michael Costa, spoke of his struggle with bipolar disorder and rugby league star Tim Smith revealed he had it, too. League legend Andrew Johns has published a book about his own struggle with the condition, though Professor Parker emphasises that at times Johns felt it gave him an advantage: ‘When he was high (manic), he could see openings in the field that no other back could see, and he would be through in a flash.’
Ironically, Johns' high or manic periods are likely to have helped his performance on the pitch at times - although this would have been counteracted by poorer playing during low (depressed) times.
"He (Johns) has described how when he was high (manic), his reflexes were better than usual and he could see gaps in the field that he would not be able to see when he was not high (manic)Â - but I cannot say that explains his (career) brilliance,'' Professor Parker said.
"When he was down (depressed), his reflexes were dulled, his concentration was down and he would have been more likely to get hurt.''
Of Johns' prognosis, Professor Parker said: "It's not going to be easy, it's going to be extremely difficult.''
Early in the 2008 season, after just three games of football (of that season), Tim Smith advised his club and team-mates that he was suffering from bipolar disorder. He then gave a statement to the media saying he had been given an indefinite leave from football, saying he was having trouble coping with the constant criticism from the media.
"I will always be bipolar,'' Smith said. "That is something that will never go away. I will get depressed from time to time, but it is something I have to deal with.
"It is something I would not wish on anyone, but I have just had to learn to deal with.''
Just three years after being labelled the next Peter Sterling, this former Dally M rookie of the year found himself in a hospital room confronting his demons. His career had come crashing down after a series of alcohol-related misdemeanours.
Alcoholism is between three and six times more common in people with bipolar, as their metabolism changes during high periods, which allows them to consume vast quantities. 
Drinking is often used as a crutch to cope with life during depressed periods too.
"This (Johns' drug and alcohol use) is par for the course for people with bipolar,'' Professor Parker said.
"When they have highs (mania), they become more compulsive, more reckless and all sorts of things can happen, including drugs and alcohol.
Johns also admitted he was suffering from depression but said he felt uncomfortable discussing his condition because "it's not an excuse".
"I have a medical condition to go with this (drug taking)," he said.
"I have a tendency to go 1000 miles an hour or nothing. (Drugs) only added (to) my risk-taking behaviour."
He said his medical condition worsened when drinking.
"Only people close to me know of my volatile mood swings," he said.
Asked whether he had bipolar disorder, Johns said: "I'm not answering that. It will come out."
An emotional Johns told how the most difficult part of the entire incident was informing his son Samuel of his crime.
"That was the hardest bit . . . explaining to a seven-year-old what I've done," he said.
"It broke my heart. Kids understand more than you think.
After years of drug taking, Johns has now vowed to quit the habit - and sent a warning to his former NRL colleagues to use his experience as a lesson.
"Some players should look at the humiliation and embarrassment this has caused not only to myself but more my family.
Asked if he was going to seek treatment for his abuse, Johns said: "I'd be a fool not to."
One out of three people with bipolar disorder report past attempts of suicide or complete it, and the annual average suicide rate is 10 to 20 times that of the general population.

Great information BB! For those that haven't read his book should do so to educate themselves in the situation of Johns & bipolar disorder.
From hearing the news of signing Andrew Johns exclusively, I am absolutely stocked, I think its a great decision by the club. The work that he'll be able to do with our two fine halves should be unbelievable, seeing them in 2012, they weren't playing at the level they were in 2011, John's should assist them in becoming even better. The young talent we are signing should definitely benefit from John's appointment also, if it works well, I hope we sign him on longer than a year.
