Alfred

I think the big differences between this and say the usual North Queensland event is two things.

1) most houses in the north are built to tropical cyclone ratings , houses here aren’t.
2) the average cyclone in the north might affect 200,000 people , this one has the potential to affect over 3 million people and create havoc for the major airport & seaport for the state.

So I think it’s a little unfair to compare this with others.

The ones on the north , far more severe , but impacting a far smaller number of people.

This one , less severe but impacting millions.

I'm from Lismore. Our town hasn't recovered from the two devastating floods we lived through in 2022. Our community is scarred.

We have a major flood warning in place. Minor flooding at present.

Wind gusts are crazy. The rain is constant.

No power where I'm at.

But I'm hoping for the best.

I imagine that home and contents insurance is impossible to get?
My policy went up 56% this year, and I live on the Northern Beaches with no claims history. The insurers are robbing me so I can only fear what they are trying to charge the residents of Lismore.

I feel for you ...... what that town and its people have endured is unfair. Good luck. Thought are with you all.

Businesses either can't get flood cover (or the premiums are exorbitant). So almost all of the CBD has evacuated this time around (the saving grace with Alfred is that we have had more notice this time around).

My home is well out of flood, also have no claims history, but my premium still rose after 2022.

Those living in flood zones can still get cover but have to shop carefully as some won't cover at all, some charge a small fortune and some still manage to keep their premium reasonable.

The big catch is so many that had cover in 2022 had to fight tooth and nail to get anything out of their insurer.

Some people have only just moved back into their homes (that were built in an area that had never flooded before, with comprehensive insurance in place) because their insurers were playing hardball.

The trauma of living through a flood (and the immediate aftermath) is hard enough.

The months (and years) of fighting after that, well, it just shouldn't happen.

If it does get down hopefully to Cat one level when crossing or close to the coast , should or usually does have much less potential for creating damage and problems .
And so much better if it can move on relatively quickly or not hang around for too long .
Usually with these types of systems and depending again how long it takes to move on , can be around the 600 - 800 plus mils of rain again potentially to impact certain areas , usually more to the middle or south of it .and depending on tide levels
Same again restoring services and normal life if it can get a bit of a move on once it crosses the coastal areas ..
Hopefully quite a few generators around to help the general communities with any power outages and for Manly supporters without power , to be able to somewhere watch the Sea Eagles hopefully win tomorrow night to add a bit of cheer and positivity

Oh man, you spit in that place and it floods.

I think the closest I could live is Goonellabah which I believe is up the hill.

I used to have friends at Dayal singh's joinery (which I think they call design spec, or something) and that place would get massacred in the floods - as it's in Jubilee street.

So stay safe! (obv) and good luck (dbl obv)

All Qld homes built from 1976 and on MUST be build to withstand CATEGORY 3 CYCLONE so all that's all houses build in last 45 years +

Yeah, that's where I am, so I'm thankful for that. 🙂

But I work in the CBD. The clean up in 2022 was brutal.

Rumours going around here it will be more like our 2017 flood (breached the levy) than the Feb 2022 flood (breached the levy also, but it was catastrophic, decimated the CBD and saw many residential areas that had never flooded before get water up in the second level of homes). We also had a major flood in March 2022, that breached the levy again. So the clean-up started all over again.

I actually joined ST the day after the Feb 2022 flood. I needed something to take my mind off it (and footy was as far removed from the devastation as I could get, at least for a little while). Had been an observer only, for many years prior to that.

Seems Alf has really slowed up. Now looking around midday Qld time tomorrow for landfall. looks like I can watch the footy tonight, Manly game, very doubtful unfortunately.

Feel for you there...
I went to LHS and lived in Tregeagle growing up,heartbreaking to think the town might go through that again.

And as soon as we mention Goonellabah....
