A Good Loss ?

Well firstly I hate losing so this above title is very borderline, but I will do the best I can to explain quickly....
*Newcastle with the crowd and vital calls would have beaten most teams tonight.
*To be down to Golden point with such poor discipline/ball control is ok.
*The Knights did not look like creating anything bar piggybacks upfield and 2-3 poor 1 on 1 tackles at crunch times.
*The Forwards rolled up field with ease and with only 2 interchange, done enough to show they will dominate most teams....potentially match any.
*A star could well be ready to unleash in Powerhouse Kelepi, apart from a poor tackle to give up a try, was a beast in attack and will only improve and also big Lane ran hard, hit hard and both were great impact.
*Croker copped a bit and personally felt his clumsy hands were assisted by some poor passes from his mates and looked a threat when he ran, also defended really well most game.
*I recall Manly and plenty of other past Premiership winning sides losing game 1, so we need to get a grip, come out and kick the Eels ass.

I never saw the game as I am on night shift .
Question ?
Did you see the Cowboys V Sharks game and how did our teams performance compare against those quality teams because they are our real measuring stick and not the Knights

Cows have an undeniably good pack and dominated most the game 75/25, but the Sharks just hung around and got closer on the scoreboard than it should have been.
The thing is, very hard to really get a good perception of the Manly game tonight as they earned good field position and just didn't capitalise on the foundations of great go forward.....to be fair would have been a 50% chance against Sharks and Cows probably would have had them by 10 based on tonights form.

We were beaten in golden point, Daly had two field goal attempts, Mitchell had two also. Early days, Croker went well, but needs too keep improving.
At the end of the day, Too much pressure on Daly....... 2016. 2018...... a long year.

I don't view today's performance as a bad result, and believe we actually did well to make it to golden point and hold the Knights out on our line (some great defence developed throughout the game). Just reckon it was a bit poor with the penalties and errors. Also think the refs lacked eyes at times but then again that really shouldn't be too influential and I don't think it was. The side never gave in and kept fighting for each other, which was impressive to see, and the go forward was sensational.

9th rd one loss in the last 11 season openers, wow. Cobwebs should be gone quicker with a match like that.

Still stand by my predictions made earlier, although some time (as always) will be needed for us to be able to observe what our full potential is. If our attack gels (had its great moments at times tonight) and our solid defence continues to develop we should be in a great position this year. Still got Walker and Lussick to return and we have finally got a goal kicker!

Just having some pleasing features aspects in a teams performance shouldn't equal a good loss. You can't just turn a blind eye to the negatives, a team still making many of last years mistakes still hasn't learnt.

The Knights were nothing special.

The boys were I'll discipline in so many areas, that's all that kept the opposition in it. Then the boys displayed that lack of composure and lack of organisation, to not take one of the 3 or 4 chances to still limp over the line.

The Knights will be better at seasons end. But they didnt even remotely look in the same class as the two other teams who have had wins so far this round.

The loss is disappointing. But sorry, I can't see many benefits which exist at all, when a team manages to beat themselves is that vein. Knights were rubbish. We were just worse.

This loss will come back to haunt us at the end of the season.

How good was Cherry’s kick from 40 out. I didn’t have much hope of him making it, or even sending it dead. Didn’t get much of an opportunity at the FG after that. They need to change the 7 tackle set after a missed FG in extra time, the knights were getting half the go forward of us, but still got better opportunities.

My thoughts, having watched it on replay knowing the result, and with my concentration somewhat hampered (alcohol related)..
It was quite a good quality game.
Kelepi is a real find.
Croker isn't far off, he did a few good things. My guess is he got first shot ahead of Hastings because of defence.
Kelly was really good, and Jorge has clearly made a very good recovery.
All up Manly looked the better, stronger side but home town penalties and a few of our own errors kept the Knights afloat.
Maybe not hometown penalties but it sure felt that way to me!
Quite a good base to build on, our team still has plenty of improvement.

Had we made 7 errors and not 17 there would have been no GP, and we would have won in a canter.

The penalties , as with every game now are often very confusing which is a real pity. It’s why SOO is so much better to watch, they largely stick the whistle in their pockets and let the players play.

It’s game 1, loads of improvement to come.

We got beaten by a non-contender. Next week we play a contender so I am a little worried. Honestly, I looked at the Knights team before the game and thought they didn't look that strong - well, not as strong as the "experts" have been telling us all summer. The Eels have MUCH more strike power than the Knights. This team is as far away from being contenders as they have ever been. Too many weak areas in our line-up.

Not going to lie, we are in massive trouble next Sunday afternoon.

Sounds like a few of you need some sharp knives for wrist cutting, pity really as you’ll probably miss an entertaining season.

FFS , it’s game 1, and we lost in Golden Point.

The positives

The footy is back.

The negatives.

It’s another week until the next game.

I don't actually think posters are being vicious or overly-negative, just realistic. The Knights, in my opinion, are still one of the weakest in the comp. I guess time will be the judge though.
