A common theme - Defence !!

Definately the contacts are very soft and I recall Jake would make many chainsaw type shots cutting them in half and Keppie used to show far more aggro off the bench...recall 1 shot against Souths where Jake smashed a kick returner who spilt the ball for Fainu to scoop up and score...
Imo Jakes never been a prototypical hit man. Just technically sound and cuts blokes in half with great technique.I actually prefer this to the big hits. It’s not gone anywhere he nailed an Easts player I think and he spilled the pill with his classic technique. Defence is all attitude and well ours leaves a bit to be desired right now. It’s what we are teaching to our under 12s at the moment. It’s about hard work getting back and off the line and working for the guy next to you. We still have moments of it just never seem to sustain it for any period of time.

Watching the roosters defence on Sunday would make you proud to support them, they hunted in numbers and never let each other down, worked their butts off, a testament to their fitness, it’s way above ours, they rush the defence and surround the ball runner, yer I know there side is stacked, so what, it’s the way they prepare and compete for the full 80 no lapses, 100% effort on effort, no wonder they are killing It.
while I’m at it their front rowers played edge rolls several times, JWH and Collins both suckEd the defence in and spread the ball, Collins 2 try assists.
and while I’m at it what about Kerry’s game, his adjustment into first receiver, halfback, outstanding, maybe DCE should watch that game and take a lesson from one of the best halfbacks in the comp, it was a master class, against the tigers i know and in the roosters side I know, but he does it week in week out.
and while I’m at it Tedesco is more than a fullback, yer I know his probably the best player in the world or is, what ever you prefer, but watch the game and watch his involvement, support play and work rate, outstanding. every fb is going to have to step it up only ones close are paps and gutho.
defence Was once one of Des’s trademarks, what’s happened?
Fifita made comments after the Titans game how their focus was just on defence.
you could also tell in Hooks interview after the Saints game their primary focus was defence, we need to keep it simple this week defence, possession and ball control, hopefully our attack will be able to find something on the back of some solid defence, STOP LEAKING SOFT POINTS AND GIVE US A CHANCE.

Gone are the days when teams feared coming to the fortress. We had solid and agressive defence all over the park. Now we might as well have red carpet and a ticket tape parade for all visitors. And @Wombat64 lube mobile parked near the members stand for all our supporters.

We need a new name for the old Fortress as she’s a bit leaky these days.

Im with you on this. I think we have enough enforcers, our edge defence lacks judgement at times and is slow but we honestly don't score enough points to keep us in matches. In the past, we may have let a try in, but go up the other end and snag one back which can keep you in the match and within range. Has a carry on effect, the boys fire up and when you are within striking distance all the players naturally go to another level. Anyone that has played the game know this. When we hardly score more than one or two tries a game, when we start getting too far behind, we know it will be a miracle to come back.

Yes, edge defence needs work, but how long has it been since we looked threatening with the ball.

The team knows its own identity. If you were to look at our team over the past few years the majority of our wins and games they have performed well in have been a result the early ambush.

If the team doesnt do well in the first 20 invariably the writing is on the wall. It also shows the level of self belief the team has in its own ability, knowing the players it has at its disposal

Considering the lop sided possession rates over the last year in particular against manly, the team knows its in for a mountain of rear guard defence after it squanders its opportunities and they essentially rely on the opposition imploding or the ref to help them regain field possession and a slight breather. They have no recipe to rescue themselves

I agree about our defence being despondent when it squanders opportunities , especially early. Its why a rabbitt on about game management, kicking , patience and respect for the ball and DCE poor control despite a few flashy finishes.

He sets the tone for a team with only a few gears but wont adapt to the team, which almost always has there heads dropped and the mental battle over before half time.

He sets the tone , not because he is the only go to , but because of his use of the ball. High risk, low reward with no regard to the teams needs, possibly wanting to spend time camped in someone elses territory and for once feel like they are actually controlling a game instead of constantly reacting

Its how his team responds to his moments, not us. Surely as someone who has played you get this , and see why its not about what he does but what he refuses to do .

Hope you had a good christmas @Simonmyers11 and looking forward to continuing our exchanges. I can see your resolve starting to weaken in a few of your posts. Your man will break you sooner or later.

Paseka is also good in defense.

That said, it's disgusting a team puts almost 30 on us, and we claim how improved we are , really shows the mindset around the place.

The fact the players aren't aware of streaks, results and stats shows affinity with losing.

We need caretakers that care. The players we have right now don't give a **** about what playing for Manly means.

Only a very rare few, and I'm seeing the lustre disappear with even Jake.
