It’s a question worth asking but I think it can be both. He’s obviously got himself a strong roster via the pathways that Gus set up but to win four on the trot and lose so much talent (via the cap) in that time, speaks to an outstanding coaching performance.

If he was not an elite coach, you can bet the team’s resolve and motivation would have wavered at some point in the last 4-5 years. If it was about brilliant individuals, you can bet the loss of so many big names would have brought them back to the pack. It seems their entire approach to the game is bulletproof regardless. I think he’s struck a style and built a system that just works.

Most of their wins seem very ‘team’ driven, with everyone playing a role.

Cleary is a brilliant coach that has managed to bring out the best of the players that he has available to him. Particularly when you factor in the players that have left over the last 4 years. Yes the system is brilliant but look at the Broncos and the cattle they have and their results this year. Even with a brilliant system you need a good coach. IMO 4 premierships takes him into the elite class

Cleary has built a system on defence coupled with blistering line speed
They dont necessarily dominate the ruck in defence with wrestle but there quick play the balls allow them to go toe to toe in the ruck game with anyone

There own kick chase is the silent champion on how the back 5 smash it so consistently.

The back 5.aim to target individual players when returning allowing a quick play the ball for number 2 setting the bar

A substantial amount of clearys kicks apply pressure and have his whole defensive line in frame, not just speedy opportunistic wingers

So i see they have built the near perfect game for the modern rules,and for the players within, they have a lot of fringe players up for the job in terms of fitness, get disrupted by injury, origin, players leaving, but still

Its a great system out there where footy is seen as a genuine pathway and cleary could not have played it any better.

In the last 2 seasons he has broken the hearts of both brisbane and melbourne fans

I agree about the Panthers dynasty bozo, but I feel it's FAR more than Seibold that has Manly "A long way off" this lofty standard, as an example, do you feel if Manly had Ivan Cleary as the coach for the past 4 years we would have Won the past 4 Premierships, because I reckon we would have finished in similar positions on the ladder....unless he bought Nathan Cleary, Liam Martin and To'o over also....

Put them both on the open market and ALL clubs will Agree with me and will Clearly pick the Best choice in Cleary and pay way more for him because Cleary has earned it

My top coaches would be Bellamy and Bennett and right now I have Cleary hot on their heels and Seibold is significantly behind these Champion coaches imo, but not as bad as some make out....in fact, I feel he done a reasonable job in 2024, though would agree we went out with a whimper.
I 100% stand by my post above that with the current Manly roster and injuries ect, that if Cleary, Bellamy and Bennett coached Manly this season, even these Top coaches are not that magical and majestic, that they would have won the Premiership.

Before Gould came in they were a basket case that constantly lost their best juniors before or as they came to 1st grade. As soon as they stopped that rot they were always going to be hard to compete with. Their junior nursery is huge.

It is a bit hard to assess whether Ivan Cleary is an elite coach or not. He has clearly done very well in managing the squad that he inherited in 2019 and the subsequent iterations of it.

But in the rather large sample size of his 295 NRL matches as coach across his Warriors stint, his first Panthers stint and his Tigers stint, he had a pretty modest 47% win rate (albeit, with the 2011 GF appearance). In his first stint at the Panthers alone he only won 45% of matches before he was sacked.

Then, after being appointed as Panthers coach for the second time, he's won 119/156 games (76%) in six seasons as coach, finishing runner-up once and winning the premiership 4 times.

One could ask, was he an elite coach all along, even when the results didn't overwhelmingly suggest it? Or is he a good coach who just happens to be presiding over an incredible squad in a club that is succeeding top-to-bottom with minimal off-field distractions?

It does make you wonder if there are other NRL coaches who may possess the same level of coaching and man management ability, but are not bestowed with such advantages as a stable/functional club, with a squad with talent and depth, with the largest and most successful rugby league junior catchment area in the country.

Good coach ,obviously a great people manager BUT he didn’t create that dynasty, he inherited the players , the system and the nursery and now they are so successful every kid within cooee of the place wants to be a Panther.

For you To discard Clearys' Extraordinary ability of 4 straight premiership wins in a row In a Salary cap Handy cap era and not put him up with the Champion coaches is absurd

Cleary has broken records and has made History in one of the Biggest achievements in the History of the game and that monumental achievement is not on Parr with any one !!!

Cleary keeps losing key players year after year and keeps innovating and wins premierships and we lose just one Turbo through injury and our wheels or shall I say feathers fall of
