2025 recruitment & retention

Could only assume that Garner must have come into some type of consideration from Manly to recruit in recent seasons but no doubt a range of factors why it did not happen .
Shrewd pickup for the Panthers , looks like still behind Sorrossen and naturally Martin there but would not have looked out of place in the Manly back row in recent season

Always interests me when players who are long gone have a good game and many rush to post about how we miss them.

Garner has been gone 9 years now from Manly. TBF to him he has carved out a solid little career at 102 games but has never cemented himself as a starter.

Can a run a line so can grab a try but he isnt improving our team.

Throw Lawton, Bullemor even Burbo in that Panthers team and they will look equally impressive.

Fringe first grader nothing more or less

Hindsight is a great thing.
I always thought Garner had a bit of Beaver about him when U20's for us (not saying he's that good, just his build and style)
His road seemed blocked here and we know Des' history of not debuting youngsters so off to the Tigers he went and obviously showed enough to get picked up by the Panthers.
He left M-W during the 2016 season.

In other words, during the first year of the Barrett era. His departure had nothing to do with Des Hasler.

‘Jim’ Garner got lucky that Cleary briefly coached him at the Tigers. Otherwise he might be back on the Old Coast playing park football.

Burbo is a good comp for Garner...and yes he would also look good on an edge in that Panthers team.

So you may think its too early to be talking 2025 recruitment but these wheels very much need to be in motion.

So my unsolicited thoughts.

Firstly, our off contract guys

Nathan Brown, Gordan Chan Kum Tong, Jamie Humphreys, Karl Lawton, Matt Lodge, Ray Vaega, Corey Wadell.

I'd certainly extend Brown another year, I think year by year is best but I could handle two years. I think we can kinda wait and see on the rest. Lodge very likely but give him at least a couple of games. Lawton will go I think and I'd let Vaega go. Waddell on minimum I think would be fine for another year but you can wait till August/Sept for that and Gordie and Jamie.....well I guess it depends on how much of a future we see in them. I've been hyped but I'm moving towards unsure.

Schuster, well I'm working on the basis of him not being here and us having a chunk of his money (who knows how much).

I'd be targeting an edge (to replace Schuster) a back.

For mine

1. Trey Mooney or Kulikefu Finefeuiaki - Two very highly rated young forwards. Finefeuiaki currently has a lot of hype and may end up over priced so Id look at sneaking under the radar on Trey Mooney. A log jam of forwards at Canberra so we may just be able to grab and I think he comess straight into our 17

2. Kayal Iro - been banging his drum for a while but, too good for NSW Cup, but I see now he has won that Sharkies centre position. I'd grab him but it may just move Garrick back to the wing.

I know people want the big names but I think the above are available, set to break out and could fit our salary cap.
I've been very impressed with Gordan Chan Kum Tong, he's been excellent at Dummy Half with his accurate passing.
Gordan Chan Kum Tong has a superb defensive technique, making very crucial tackles at vital times of a game.
Gordan Chan Kum Tong reads the game like an A-Grade student, enabling him to be in positions to support his Manly team mates.
Gordan Chan Kum Tong is a Team Player.

Of all the other players you mentioned coming off contract I'd like to re-sign all of them.

Most would agree that Trey Mooney has been an outstanding performer this year.
The question is which player would he replace, Bullemor, Waddell, Ray Vaega, Matt Lodge, Josh Aloiai???

Hello Gordy.

Lawton filling second row atm, Burbo second row next year, Corey Waddell or is there another up and comer for the spot?

I know his kicking from dummy half adds another string to our bow. But I really wish he wouldn't.

It’s not a string if the arrow doesn’t fly!

I’m pretty vocal about his shortcomings, but his brand of footy if done well will serve us well in however many games we got left. Tackles his heart out

It seems like Addo-Carr will be punted from Canterbury. Not that we need him, but he's a very fine winger. Where will he land? My bet is either Souffs or Doesn'tmatta.

Probably the chickens as he wants to win a comp and the great culture as is prepared to take a significant pay reduction to do it

South's would be mad to sign him. Imagine the disruption he and Latrell could cause. On 2nd thoughts, please sign him. Go for it Bunny dudes.

Makes you wonder if he should've stayed in Melbourne or if they were prepared to let him go after his COVID shenanigans despite at the time being the best winger in the game.
