An easy way for the NRL to shorten the season by two weeks: get rid of the predictable preliminary finals matches between teams 5 to 8.
We all know the teams that finish in the top four are the real contenders for the premiership. The other four teams in the finals are just there to add to revenues and make it appear that those teams had a 'successful' season.

The tigers season would be over after Rd 3 if they didn't have a Top 8

Just being realistic.
Unless you qualify in the top four you have no chance of winning the premiership. It's been proven.
I know it won't happen because it would damper the hopes of many fans, but the season is too long as it is. Reducing the two weeks would allow the SOO to be played on a weekend without any NRL matches, thus making the comp fairer.
But, as I say, fairness is not in the NRL charter. If it was we'd have a draft system like other codes, and a points-based system rather than the current laughable 'Cap' which allows Easts to buy whoever they want.

So apart from a different competition name, what is the major difference?

The 1995 grand final the dogs came from 7th. That was the first year of the top 8, and the first year of the 20-team competition
