2023 Defence Matters

It’s great to see the “hunt as a pack” defensive mentality returning. These big hits keep coming.

The Venga bus didn’t get the message though but his hit was the weight of two players and I loved his Spudd impersonation after the hit.

The only question I have been left wondering is would our edge defences held up if Kelma was still on the field? I am hoping he also got the message as others also clearly improved.

That was a lot more like it.

Great attitude all night. And we controlled possession, in the main, and played a lot smarter.

That hit on Olam was the moment I knew we would win. I don't think he has ever been hit like that before.
watching him after the hit was like watching any movie where the school bully gets hit back for the first time.

It was our best defensive effort in a long time, score board aside, what I liked most, well I liked almost all of it, anyway.
1) We hunted as a pack and stacked on, there was a couple of times we had 6 players involved in a tackle and we maintained that gang tackling approach all 80.
2) We hit with purpose and they didn’t handle copping a dose of there own
3) We move up defensively instead of letting the attack get us on the back foot.
4) Our effort, we worked for each other and the team played as a unit.
5) Last but not least, we still have improvement in us, as our match fitness improves our line speed will improve and if we keep hunting as a pack like we did tonight, we will enjoy more success.

equal posession means waaaaay less tackling
quality over quantity every day
ooomph factor just tops it off

line speed in there red zone was good all night and made them sweat in there own jocks

just gotta keep them wound up, often enough it seems

attitude was acrross the park though in many little things that impacted where and how often we defended.

better kick and chase deserves a mention in its defensive attributes also.
had em pinned……

There are multiple threads being raised for multiple reason's why Manly are not winning.
Turbo useless, Harper useless, Croker useless, Weekes useless, Kelma useless, Parker useless, DCE useless, Aloiai useless and sack them all.
It goes on and on and on and on full of hysteria.

Our defence is useless - plain and simple.

If we can fix that, we will win more games than we lose as our attack is good.

Can Seibold and his team of high profile coaches do their job and fix our defense?

Thanks for reading Seibold 😜🙏

Olam wasn't the same after that, when he came back from the head knock, tackling wise he was easy pickins.

ONLY 14 missed tackles, our lowest of the season. Very impressive. Obviously with the possession and territory we had we should've put on more points, but I'm happy with keeping this standard of defence and hogging the ball because points will come eventually. Plus the main key to our attack, Schuey is still not back, that's when we get points easy. With the amount of ball and field position we had yesterday, if we had Schuey we would've put another 2 or 3 tries.

Will our season turn this weekend with the return of Jakey and the recent inability of the Rorters to score points.

We have bought up big in the past few days but it seems focused on the backs (Stage 1).

Hopefully Stage 2 is underway where we offload and recruit some forwards with some defensive grunt. Schuster in the off season needs to throw away the joggers and exercise bike and get a tackling bag. A few targeted sessions with Igor Beaver and Jakey should see him right.

Let’s bring the defensive Manly we saw against the Storm at Brookie and repeat it for 3 games in a row. Is that too much to ask?

I'd be more worried about Brooks defensive efforts. Look at the amount of missed tackles he's accumulated over his career. It is very concerning.
I calculated he averages about 4 missed tackles per game.

I’m surprised at that figure although he does get a lot of traffic sent his way. I have always considered him a pretty good defender to the extent I reckon he would make a good running 9 not unlike Damien Cook.

From my observation of brooks is that he is a willing defender which is what you want from your halves. He doesn’t shirk it. He can’t help it that he is a midget.
