[Resurrected] 2021+ On & Off Season Misdemeanors

I wonder if the Broncos have put together a “compensation package” to the victims to drop any more serious charges, thus reducing the length of the NRL’s sanctions
The victims don't decide what charges are laid, the cops do that.

Obviously the drug test didn't reveal enough drug in his system to have affected his driving. Otherwise he certainly would have been charged with the more serious charge of DUI.

Yes,I’m aware of that, but the victims can ask to not press certain charges once police have made their claims

Yes but the police are still bound by the Qld DPP prosecution guidelines, which includes this:

"The more serious the offence, the more likely, that the public interest will require a prosecution. Indeed, the proper decision in most cases will be to proceed with the prosecution if there is sufficient evidence. Mitigating factors can then be put to the Court at sentence."

In the case of a driving offence which actually results in a head on collision I'd say there is zero chance the cops would not charge DUI if the evidence supported DUI.

Broncos star Ezra Mam is set to avoid further police charges in a decision that could significantly reduce the NRL sanctions he is facing ahead of the 2025 Premiership.
Mam will front court in Brisbane on December 16 following a head-on car crash last month that put his $4 million Broncos contract in jeopardy.

Mam, 21, was this week formally charged with drug driving and driving unlicensed after colliding with a male Uber driver transporting a woman and four-year-old girl as passengers.

All four people were hospitalised following the collision, with police declaring “no-one was seriously injured”.

After recording a positive result to roadside drug test, Mam underwent a secondary blood test in hospital which returned a positive result this week.

The woman Uber passenger has told television news outlets she suffered a fractured and dislocated tailbone in the collision while her daughter sustained a fractured hip. Neither is expected to undergo surgery.

Security cameras captured footage of Mam’s Ford Ranger utility allegedly veering into the oncoming lane on Simpsons Road in Bardon on October 18 moments before the collision with a Toyota Camry.

Mam was issued a traffic infringement notice (fine) by police for failing to maintain control of a vehicle.

However after completing their investigation, police said they would not charge Mam with any further offences.

When asked if the investigation was closed a Queensland Police spokesperson said: “No further charges (are) expected, the investigation is now before the court.”

The charges he is facing is likely to play a decisive factor in Mam’s availability for the Broncos next year.

The NRL and Broncos will not sanction Mam until his court proceedings are finalised and they have received confirmation from police that no further charges are pending.

An NRL suspension of about two months, coupled with a significant fine from League Central, for Mam has been speculated.

The penalties may have been significantly heavier if he was facing further, more serious, charges.

Given the formal charges, Mam is unlikely to be sacked by the Broncos and is aiming to report for pre-season training in the New Year.

Even if he receives a suspension from the NRL it is unlikely he will be prohibited from training with his teammates at Red Hill.

Brisbane coach Michael Maguire (R) has spoken of the challenges facing Ezra Mam (L).

Mam was scheduled to complete his rehabilitation program early this week and new Broncos coach Michael Maguire said the Brisbane playmaker had a long road ahead of him.

“The reason you go to rehab – you go in there to bring change to your life and understand yourself and know how grateful we are for the things we have,” Maguire said.

“Sometimes people lose their way, but you can find your way again and that’s our plan for Ezra to get back to his best.

“I believe Ezra has to own where he is at and I believe he will.

“He is in a very serious situation and he needs to work hard to turn things around.

“We have to go through the process, the charges have come out and Ezra is working on himself.

“It then goes to the NRL and they and the Broncos will deal with the situation.

“It will be what it will be, but we have to change where we have been as a club and use this moment in time to improve and build the culture on what we want it to be.”

He gets butthurt over being called a monkey and Spencer gets 8 wks...
He does this gets (speculation)8wks...
Speculation is them subtly putting it out there before it's out there.

🤔

That’s ridiculous.

Compare Mam’s incident to Sandon Smith’s, where he’s been charged for negligent driving resulting in GBH because the guy had to get his little toe amputated (not downplaying it, just comparing).

Smith was licensed & had no trace of drugs in his system & was hit by another car while inching out of his driveway.

Mam was unlicensed, had traces of an illicit substance in his blood & collided head on with another vehicle, injuring 3 people.

No charges for causing injury to others (whether of enough seriousness to be considered GBH or not)?

Calls for Ezra Mam to make immediate return to Brisbane Broncos as stint in rehab ends

NRL greats Scott Sattler and Mat Rogers have declared Ezra Mam should be free to make an immediate return to Brisbane Broncos training after his stint in rehab ended this week. Mam has been charged by Queensland Police for driving under the influence of drugs and being unlicensed after a head-on collision last month that reportedly left a four-year-old girl with a broken hip.
But crucially, police have confirmed there won't be any more charges levelled against the Broncos player in relation to the injuries that resulted from the crash. It means Mam will likely face a much lesser punishment from the NRL than what he might have if further charges were laid.
According to reports, Mam has now left a rehab facility after a month-long stint following the incident. He's technically free to train with the Broncos because the charges don't trigger the NRL's no-fault stand-down policy, which is reserved for more serious offences that carry possible jail time.
But the Broncos are said to be wary of rushing Mam straight back into the spotlight and will give him until the new year before getting him to training. But discussing the situation on SEN radio on Tuesday evening, Sattler and Rogers questioned whether it'd be better to get Mam back around his teammates.

"If Ezra Mam did return to Broncos training next week, do you think it's a bad look?" Sattler asked. But Rogers immediately said: "No. he's been to rehab. He's doing the right thing. Going to training is different to playing. "I'm not saying let him back in (to play), but it's his job. I don't think he'll be playing for the first few months of the season, but he's still got to do his job. You have to be allowed to go to work."

Mam should be in jail. He was driving unlicenced: Strike 1. He had ingested an illegal substance: Strike 2. He was driving dangerously: Strike 3. He caused serious pain and suffering to several people: Strike 4. He is reported to have a very poor driving record: Strike 5.
Mam is lucky he didn't kill someone (as, of course, are the innocent victims of the crash).
Why was his punishment from the court so lenient? Is it because of reverse racism and/or he is a good footballer, or is the magistrate simply out of touch with community sentiments?
Now the NRL has banned him for nine matches. This, to me, is a 'neither here nor there' punishment. It's something, but not nearly as harsh as I think he deserves.

9 matches really?

I would have thought most NRL fans would think one full season as the minimum punishment.

Most serious injuries take a player out for 1 season and the injuries he has caused would have to start from there.

Makes the no fault stand down players look hard done by not that i condoned their stupid acts either.
