Roberts has to choose between Broncos and Sea Eagles

Why is James Roberts stalling on signing a new deal at the Broncos?

I’m hearing that Manly have let Roberts’ management know they are keen on signing him - and that has ‘Jimmy The Jet’ in two minds.

The Sea Eagles are enjoying a good season but have two massive holes to fill in their backline following the retirements of Brett Stewart and Steve Matai.

Roberts is a quality finisher who would be a great fit for the Eagles - and isn’t on massive dollars at Brisbane.

The talented centre is only 24 but has already shown he’s not afraid to move around, having played for the Rabbitohs, Panthers, Titans and Broncos in his seven seasons in the NRL.

Manly boss Bob Fulton is a smart operator who is hard to say no to - but then so is Broncos master coach Wayne Bennett.

THE Storm’s succession planning for life after their current crop of champions is in full swing, with the club locking down the long term replacements for Cam Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater.

While Cronk will leave the club at season’s end and off-contract Slater weighs up his future, Melbourne have re-signed rising stars Brandon Smith, Brodie Croft and Jahrome Hughes in one fell swoop, as well as injured outside back Cheyse Blair.

Sydney Roosters utility Connor Watson has signed a three-year deal with the Newcastle Knights, starting in 2018.

Watson, who scored for the Roosters against Newcastle on Friday night, has played 30 NRL games since making his debut last season.

"Connor is an exciting young talent who has plenty of great football ahead of him," Knights CEO Matt Gidley said.

"There is no doubt Connor will grow with our team and be a great addition to the club."

Watson's signing follows Newcastle's recruitment of young Cowboys fullback Kalyn Ponga, Broncos centre Tautau Moga and Roosters second-rower Aidan Guerra for 2018, with Shaun Kenny-Dowall scoring on his club debut on Friday after making a mid-season move to the Knights.

The Gold Coast Titans have confirmed the signing of Jai Arrow from the Brisbane Broncos for the next three seasons.

Arrow, a Burleigh Bears junior, will return to the Gold Coast in season 2018, looking for a chance to play NRL on a regular basis.

The 22-year-old made his NRL debut for the Broncos in Round 10 of season 2016 against the Sea-Eagles and has gone on to play 19 matches at the top level.

Coach Neil Henry is excited about the arrival of Arrow.

“Jai is a local product who is returning home and looking to further his NRL experience at the Titans,” Henry said. “He is an outstanding competitor who prides himself on his high work rate and will add greatly to our depth in the forwards.

A PINCH AND A PUNCH

THE bitter rivalry between Manly Sea Eagles and Cronulla Sharks continues. This time, it’s over one of the hottest young prospects in the game.

The Sea Eagles have stolen NSW under-18 half Luke Metcalfe, a Cronulla junior who excelled in Harold Matthews and S.G. Ball. The youngster is seen as a long-term replacement for Daly Cherry-Evans.

Cronulla already has Shane Flanagan’s son, Kyle, earmarked for big things as their first-grade halfback. Kyle is the top pointscorer in Holden Cup this year.
