great thread, thanks. The footage of Ian Martin with his trade mark 'bumping' was just how I remembered him running. Phil Lowe was brilliant too.

comment a few posts above about league going backwards in Sydney.... there was a real buzz throughout the semi finals and grand final week was something every local community got right into if their team was involved. Even listening to Frank Hyde calling the game on 2SM was great. .. followed by his sing song.

Thanks eagle66!

How much was it to get into the SCG in 1974. 50K fans and $30K gate? Take some off for the SCG members. $1.50 general entry?
And you could bring your own esky full of beer in those days as well

It’s true. And all through the season my dad would bring home the afternoon mirror and sun after work, and I’d read 8 pages of league coverage in each paper, much like the articles copied here above.

The buzz is non existent now.

Fun fact ..... In 1974 the curtain raiser to the NSW v Qld game at the Sports Ground was an U/21 Presso's game between Manly and Easts ....... Manly shared the away dressing room with the Qld team ....... Beetson played for NSW .... the crowd was under 6000 ..... beers were free ....
