Manly Brett Stewart out on top as No.1 tryscoring fullback
Manly Brett Stewart out on top as No.1 tryscoring fullback Manly Brett Stewart out on top as No.1 tryscoring fullback ahead of 200th game for Sea Eagles DEAN RITCHIE THE DAILY TELEGRAPH SEPTEMBER 17, 2014 ON the eve of his 200th NRL game, Brett Stewart is now simply the best. The Daily Telegraph can reveal that Stewart has the greatest tryscoring strike-rate of any fullback in rugby league's 106-year history. Stewart has crossed 145 times in 199 appearances for Manly at a remarkable strike-rate of 0.729 tries a game. No other fullback in the game - past or present - can top Stewart, whose tryscoring exploits will be desperately needed for the Sea Eagles's elimination semi-final against Canterbury at Allianz Stadium on...
Manly Foran the NRL’s next $1m man Kieran Foran is set to become rugby league's next $1 million-a-season player, but Manly Immortal Bob Fulton has paid him the ultimate compliment, declaring the talented five-eighth could be a great across any era of the Sea Eagles' history. As Foran prepares to lead Manly into tonight's qualifying final against South Sydney at Allianz Stadium, leading NRL player agents agreed the 24-year-old had joined the elite player bracket and expect him to be paid accordingly. Manly have warned South Sydney prop George Burgess to watch his back in Friday night's NRL qualifying final, with Steve Matai hunting for revenge. When the two sides met five weeks ago at the SCG in a game won 22-4 by Souths, Sea Eagles hitman Matai was forced from the field writhing in pain after a nasty chicken wing tackle from Burgess early in the match. Matai, who has a long history of neck and shoulder problems, was forced out for a week due to the ugly tackle which went unchecked by match officials but resulted in Burgess being suspended for two matches. Crafty Sea Eagles five-eighth Kieran Foran acknowledges Manly head into their finals clash against the Rabbitohs on Friday night in sub-standard form and must lift if they're to the grand final qualifier in a fortnight. Winning just two of their past five fixtures, the Sea Eagles managed only a last-gasp win over the Panthers and a below-average three-point victory over the lowly Titans heading into the finals – something Foran admits of great concern down Narrabeen way. History is made this weekend when Queensland's own Belinda Sleeman becomes the first woman to officiate an NRL match. However, NRL referees manager Tony Archer said Sleeman's breakthrough was only the beginning. Archer predicted to The Courier-Mail that the NRL will have a female whistle blower regularly controlling games within a few years. Sleeman will run the touch line during Wests Tigers clash with Cronulla on Saturday afternoon. Read More
NRL clubs will try to win key concessions from the game's telecasters in scheduling for next season, but largely accept that a fixed draw will be retained. Thursday and Monday night matches will remain, despite generally poor crowds held responsible for a 1.2 per cent decrease in attendances this season. But some clubs want a more even share of Monday home matches after Penrith were given four games in the difficult timeslot for attendances, compared with none for Brisbane and one for Sydney Roosters, Parramatta and Canterbury. Crazy eyes KIERAN Foran calls him 'Mad Chocie'. Reckons there are times when he looks at the big fella and sees the crazy eyes. But he says that's what separates Anthony Watmough from the rest. And it's why Mad Chocie has been hailed the most important man in Manly's quest to win an ninth premiership this year. Watmough is playing through the pain of a torn biceps, which he ripped off the bone completely during State of Origin One back in May. Read More
