Des- How's that big sports radio program kicking on pal?
Zorba- It's a job Des.
Des- Can you put in a word form me about our chances this year Zorbs?
Zorba- I can Desmond, what would you like me to say?
Des- No nine, no Turbo, no chance. Say we'll be fighting it out for our first spoon.
Zorba- you going under the radar again?
Des- Nah Zorb, I just want rile the sausage roll eaters up on f@#$%n Silvertails.

Whatever his agenda is he’s stating the unfortunate obvious. Our spine is effed.

flipside - Fainu and a fit Turbo we can challenge. Everyone on the park in 2019, we looked a threat. Wasn’t long ago when pundits had Manly as a genuine chance in 2020.

You are right

We looked a threat even without everyone on the park. Look at the patched-up side we finished with, featuring the likes of Elliott, Waddell & Jetski in the second row, Keppie and Haumole making their NRL debuts. No Turbo, Thommo, Siro yet we were unlucky to lose that semi vs Souths.
People seem to just skim over this absolute truth, it's almost like it never even occurred for some.

Trouble is that old adage still applies unfortunately in that you are only as good as your last game . Try the last 11 outings for Manly to get a current gauge [ injuries aside ] and only one win against a slightly depleted Bull Dogs . Always try and be up beat but there is going to have to be quite a large paradigm shift in team effort and performance to get the show back on the road in terms of Manly being competitive again . Obviously a range of factors , still some pretty decent cattle available however and again surely it is not beyond them or the coaching staff to get the side to have a real dig and play to a competitive level again

And possibly 15 games after our first four this year!!

Imagine the blood on the floor in here if that happens ???

Certainly hope that that is not the case of course , maybe they are just not good enough as a unit with the present available squad and playing style but just seems so frustrating that they really should be doing better[ again injuries aside ] at all levels and getting better results or not at least getting the type of floggings . Schuster and foz should be able to improve the attack , just need that defensive determination and a bit of mongrel back again

The first four weeks will be massive for us. The no Turbo, no Fainu reality has directed more heat on the side and the media sharks are already circling the raft. Doing everything they can to intensify the pressure on the players and coach.

The team must display a fighting mentality and show evidence that they have readjusted their style under the new rules. Turbo's injury will either be a blessing in disguise, or the event which brought the club's season (and possibly Des's career) to a premature end.

Don "t think that Des will be going anywhere unless things go really haywire . As for Turbo , he may [ and certainly hope ] come back bigger and better and prove to be the serious asset that he is more then capable of for Manly .

Defence up the middle is biggest issue, Croker needs to fill void since Api departure.

Unfortunately, both Peter Peters and Buzz Rothfield make very valid points. Make-shift hooker and utility players. Tom Trbojevic being Tom Trbojevic and spending more time off the field than on.

Other considerations:

  • No Tom Trbojevic (out medium term)
  • No Manase Fainu (out long term)
  • 0 specialist Hookers
  • 0 specialist fullbacks replacing Tom
  • Jason Saab has had 7 first grade games
  • Haumole Olakau'atu has had 7 first grade games
  • Josh Schuster has had 1 first grade game
  • Keiran Foran is possibly the most injury prone player in the league
  • Lost our best prop (one of the leagues best) replaced him with middle tier
  • Reuben Garrick hasn't been able to replicate year one in any areas
  • No sound goal kicker
  • Lost Joel Thompson - replaced him with Andrew Davey
  • Last 10 games record (rates with the worst of any team, ever)
  • Trial form was disgraceful
  • Team look unready (unfit) and have not adapted to the "new game"

etc, etc, etc.

That being said, we CAN be competitive, but this requires HARD work, siege mentality, us against them, teamwork, effort, intensity & absolute pace and speed at everything we do (ESPECIALLY the ruck and play the ball speed).

I do think Des Hasler is out of his element though, and needs to adapt, and shift his mindset, because his last few years of coaching:

13th (Manly)
6th (Manly)
11th (Canterbury)

32 wins, 39 losses (win % 45)

Has the game moved past him? This year will be telling.

Mate cast your mind back to the finals when we played both the Sharks & Rabbitohs undermanned!!! We almost got to & should have got to the big one. Elliott , Parker, Taufua, Waddell & Perrett in the team. We have recruited much better for this year & our depth is much better. Fvck what Peters or the ‘experts’ think of our depth. We now have players battling each other for a starting spot & that’s a good thing. Yes we had Fainu & Api but I’m confident Croker will suffice & surprise. If we could do it in 2019, we can do it now. Barring injury we have a better all round team this year than what we’ve had for quite a few years & one that is capable of top 4 easily.
If Manase is cleared then even better!!!

Res: Schuster, Aloiai, Olakau’atu, Keppie......

Cust, Harper, Funa, Parker, Tuipulotu, Taufua, Koula, Ben T,
Davey, Boyle, Sipley, Saddler, Fainu

Everyone is underestimating us, including our own Silvertails!! I’m happy with what we have & still can add to the 30 squad.

Zorba is only saying what many of "the realists" on here have already said .... and maybe his agenda is to put a rocket up the players ... just saying ...
Agree with you feathered friend

Zorba is being real and and has made some VALID points stating all the obvious that have been standing out like dogs balls in our lousy only one win from our last 11 games

Now it is our coaches opportunity to finds solutions and find a way for our team to learn to win again and VALIDATE his worth

Hear what your saying and hope you are right but I reckon you are underestimating the effect that having 2 QUALITY hookers had for us in 2019...

Croker will defend his a*se off and hopefully offer an additional kicking option - but he will not produce offensive metre-grabbing runs like either Api or Manase...

Great question feathered friend @Ryan

Our Great Manly legend Des Has been a Great player and a Great Grand final winning coach

The fact is........ No one can rest on their laurels and remain Great

* We all want Des to be Great again and make Manly Great again *

It is hard to argue with any of that...
