Will Hopoate

Hopoate has had a lot of ordinary seasons intermingled with sporadic flashes of brilliance, however not worth the money he's been getting over the years.
As for Gutherson, again not worth what Parra are paying him and certainly not worth what it would take to get him back and also forego the captaincy of the team, so you can forget about him as well, anyway hesone more ACL injury away from retirement.
Trouble is everyone wants instant results, rather than putting in the groundwork on some serious up and coming players

Daly and Tom are on small contracts compared to what players of their calibre will be demanding in the coming seasons. I wouldn't be touching their contracts.
Tom isn't of a nearly 'million dollar per year' calibre and dce's contract is at least 200K too big. Two wrongs don't make a right and just because some clubs are throwing around ridiculous money toward undeserving players doesn't mean we need to. At the moment they're both great players but you can't justify that Tom is anywhere near 900K a year worthy yet, nor can you that DCE is around 1.2M per year when there are some decent halves for legitimately half that (not suggesting we buy a meh half).

Have a look at origin 3. Daly owned that game, looked every bit a million dollar man (that he is) in a team with a plan and all players putting in.
I see a lot of people saying he is on too much money when he was the best player in an origin game only a few weeks ago and it shows just how blind some are.
He suffers because he is in a terrible team.

Would love to see Hoppa and Gutho back but won't happen. We are salary cap shafted by Turd Greenc**t.

He played well last year in a better team but even then he wasn't worth 1.2M. No one, other than Thurston has an influence of 1.2M. Even that is a hell of a lot to pay Thurston

I see your point BUT all salary talk is pointless while there is a) undisclosed salaries and b) undisclosed TPA's

If both were in Melbourne we'd all be seeing this differntly. When two players are dominating origin like these two did I'd argue they are worth every cent. Almost every halfback/fullback in the game is one 1 million a season. Even the ones who don't deserve that pay.

And that's why we have players like Valentine Holmes basically holding the Sharks to ransom because he wants to play fullback to get the ridiculously overpaid contracts of some fullbacks. Although the people at this club need to stop falling to pressure from what other clubs are doing and concentrate solely on themselves and their needs. A fullback like Trbo, loyal and developing, doesn't require a 900K fullback deal at 22 or whatever he is, not only hasn't he earnt it yet but you could easily suspect that in later years he will earn it, meaning that if he thinks he's a 900K player now, he will think he's a 1.2M player in the future when he's actually a quality player.

We just can't pay players for what we think they will be, because as observable in a large proportion of people, those who are given it all will want to take further. Players aren't nearly as whole-hearted these days as they had been to compromise money for both loyalty and success.

If you don't pay players well you will lose these players. The nice guy mentality of expecting boys to take pay cuts is long gone. 1.2 is the norm for a quality halfback in the modern era and soon it will be less.

It's not nice guy mentality, it's the realistic mentality. We should have offered them what they were worth rather than what they could earn. 700K for Tommy Trbo, 1M for DCE. We've been ripped off and you can see the imbalance within our lineup because we have a few marquee players overpaid, and the remainder of the squad is filled with rejects and young players who are often both clueless and punching above their weight. If we lose a player, so be it. They suffer, eg. Mitch Moses, James Tedesco (luckiest of the three) and Aaron Woods, left to find money because tigers refused to be manipulated by their players, and now the tigers have since developed a more stable and balanced side.

With only few marquee players dominating a side, that side can grow inconsistent as they rely on the constant good performances of those few players

Unfortunately Harry, its not what we think a player is worth, but rather what the market thinks they are worth. DCE had signed a contract with the Titans for $1.1 million over 4 years. We weren't going to get him back for less. If we didn't have DCE we wouldn't have one of the best halves in the game. Same applies with Tom T. St George were prepared to pay a fortune for the Trbojevic boys. Do we back down on a healthy contract to keep them or lose them and look for inferior players for less money.

There are stars in this game who go long way to winning you the contests. Sometimes you have to pay through the nose to secure one or two players for money perhaps beyond their apparent worth, to help get your team into the finals. Newcastle paid a 19 year old Ponga, a player barely out of the juniors, $600,000 per year for a 5 year contract. No doubt if he reaches his potential that contract will be enhanced. Did they make a mistake? As a club you look to enhance a position that needs a talented player, and if the going price is higher than you think he's worth, but still within your range, do you knock him back. Getting a player like that is more than his individual talent. It is what his value is to the team you are putting together

If we gave them money you want to they would be at another club. E.g. Daly only stayed because we offered more than the gold coast.

And that wouldn't have worked out too bad for us, as mentioned in my last post. Would've allowed us to balance our side

Dude we offered (and he accepted 800K) then Penn's went and withdrew the offer only to be caught with their pants down via foz leaving and Daly going to titans.
