Wildcard Weekend ( thoughts )

Far more interest if there was a mirror finals comp to arrive at a wooden spooner.
Double headers with the regular finals matches.
Winners eliminated and losers keep on playing until the 2 best losers play off to determine who is awarded the spoon on Grand final day.

I'd give us a damn good show of 'winning' the spoon under these conditions.

I'm a firm believer that the minor premier should be rewarded by being given a week off, this can only happen if there's a top 5, or perhaps 7.

Rewarding mediocrity. Of Course.

In the age of kids playing junior sport without scores being kept, sports days where and everyone gets a participation ribbon, so no one feels left out.

The NRL having a winner, So barbaric and mean, it really does need to keep up with the times, one winner, that must be pretty offensive to so many other teams, players, coaching staff, fans.

The answer is obvious, just don't keep score at all, everyone in the NRL gets a participation ribbon instead.

Welcome to the impact of Labours Extreme Left on Society.

I think if this is to stop teams resting players it’ll be a failure as any sides that are locked into a position, regardless of results , would probably rest players.
Not necessarily. The top 6 teams may not want their players having two weeks off in that period as well as the chance of another week off if a top 4 team wins week 1 of the finals. Only chance of stopping it,would be by shortening the season to 18-20 rds, depending on how many teams there is in the comp.Because it means every game becomes more important. But we all know the broadcasters won’t go for that if they have to pay that much and we all know players won’t take pay cuts

AFL do this
Exactly, give everyone a rest, if it's such a big issue for the NRL (all of a sudden).
But in saying that, I don't see a need for it, as there was nothing wrong with what the Panthers did last week, or what the Raiders will do this week. IMO.

TV get the same games, Sports betting agencies get the same games to bet on.

But do they get the same interest from fans? What was the ratings like and how much $$ was bet on the game? I didn’t watch or punt on the game due to the situation, but i maybe the odd one out.

I watched and was more interested, hoping for a big upset.....If my team had won 4 grand finals in a row, Id be happy, whatever they did.

I’m not questioning the Panthers in this situation,I’d be more than happy for Manly to do the same thing(if only). This is all on the NRL and their long season

These ideas being tossed up as a 'wildcard' are not a truly a 'wildcard'.

Rewarding mediocrity is what the 21st century does best. So with that in mind, a true 'wildcard' would be for the NRL to give the 8th place finals spot to whichever team outside of the Top 7 won the most NRL games played after Origin III.

Or another real 'wildcard' would be something like having a 'Wildcard Grand Final' match between the winners of the QLD Cup and the NSW Cup and then giving that winner the NRL Top 8 spot for the finals.

And if you're worried about competitiveness, I'd even let these QLD Cup and NSW Cup teams short term contract for the 'Wildcard Grand Final' match and the NRL play offs up to 4 players from any NRL club that isn't in the Top 7 or from Super League or even RU.

Giddy up!
