Why are so many players leaving the NRL?

Israel Falou, Jarryd Hayne, Jason Taumalolo, Valentine Holmes and Marika Koroibete. The list is certainly growing.

With the recent news that Cowboys backrower Jason Taumalolo and Sharks try-scoring extraordinaire Valentine Holmes are heading over to America to trial with some NFL teams, questions have been raised as to why so many players are leaving the NRL.

The league is still competitive despite the recent dominance of Melbourne, Brisbane and North Queensland.

The resurgence of the Cronulla Sharks really got the crowds going and no one really ever saw Canberra competing the way they did this season under Ricky Stuart.

And let’s not forget that it was only three seasons ago that South Sydney completed their fairytale NRL comeback by winning the 2014 title against the Bulldogs in a dominant display.

So with competition still ripe and the salary cap still increasing with the new TV rights deal; why are players still determined to leave the NRL?

A lot of the players don't love the game. They're just good at the game because they're natural athletes. This means they'll be good at other games too. So where's the money the best?
Listen to a lot of them talk and they never even grew up watching Rugby League. Basketball seems more popular with them, and American basketball at that.

Kalyn Ponga had a choice of professional golf or rugby league. He chose footy.

Well of course no "rule" means 100%.
I was merely stating a trend I've noticed. Of course some will still grow up as RL tragics but I find it unacceptable that any don't. Just like I find it unacceptable that some people go to all the effort of learning an instrument and then play Bruno Mars or One Direction songs.

Is it as much to blame for the lack of creativity in the game as the coaches stifling tactics? Half the players are just phoning it in, doing a job.

Taumalolo would make a great fullback in the NFL but that's not exactly a hot commodity. It's usually a rookie FA or low draft pick.

Wow. If taumolo and the other guy go that will only leave 398 players for the top 25 at each nrl club.

I hope there are enough players from Qld cup, Nsw cup and u/20s who can step up into those 2 vacant spots.

Taumalolo as punt returner would be a nightmare but he'd have to catch it first.
Punt returners are usually small dudes. Fullback is basically the battering ram for the running back, so you don't even need to catch. You just run straight over guys and clear a path. He could do what Lorenzo Neal did for LT...
