Snake

Snake's Alive!
I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that confidence would be a big factor in righting this ship that is currently off course.

The reason we have leaked three trys against the worst attacking team in the competition is due to confidence. When you see a defensive line back pedalling, you can bet it's confidence issue.

You see our players are afraid to make a decision and avoid making a decision for as long as possible because they are scared to make a mistake.

Good defensive teams attack with their defence...nervous teams back pedal.

Don't we have a defensive coach to give them confidence?

Maybe Nathan Grey is also our defensive coach? We mirror the wallabies

Were we lacking confidence when we rolled into the Dragons and leaked 50 points ?
Then 40 the week after ??

Worst performance from a Manly side in many a year. That was disgraceful against a sh1t side

That's what caused the confidence issue.

We were flat that day and had a number of injuries and Saints put 50 on us...then we played the Storm who are of course a great side...the seeds of this confidence issues were planted in Wollongong.

How do we get belted by team below us but beat the Rorters.
I think the Roosters had our measure that day but went to sleep in the second half and we took advantage. But we leaked 18 first half points in that game and back pedalled like we did today.

No enthusiasm, no spirit. That's all it has been for the last month and a half. I am stunned by this disgusting performance.

As someone on nine said, we were just so submissive, never struggled in the play the ball, never attacked in defence, always held back, had no support

Honestly Snake, we should be able to run a Reserve Grade side out and still not concede 50 points.

That goes well beyond feeling flat for a day, then losing confidence for the rest of the season.
Defence is 90% attitude and 10% tactical.
Defensive systems rely on attitude.

Still think everyone is making an effort snake? As I've been saying, too many average players in our squad, skill can be subsidised bu effort and desire, but there was none of that today either.

We have thrown our season away.

That was deplorable.

Energy levels, not doing things at speed, not working as a unit, pockets of aggression and intensity in all aspects of the game will create a conducive environment for a lack of confidence to be exposed.

It is not primarily due to a lack of confidence causing the issues but a lack of confidence exposed due to Manly giving teams the opportunities to expose them.

Manly peaked against an in poor form, during Origin period Cronulla, basically every game from this point has been downhill.

Dylan Walker spoke way too early during the middle of the year commenting on the doubters thinking Manly will slip back. (mind you he has been one of our better players energy wise up to a few weeks ago where even Dylan has lost some spark)

There were some instances energy wise and contact wise early on that Manly wanted to turn the corner, problem is sustaining the enthusiasm during the grind and when things are not going your way is much harder to do.

Attacking arrogance and over-rating ourselves in this area with the fast pockets of points Manly could produce in long range tries saved Manly from never putting in an 80mins composed display.

Attitude and flat are the same things...a "flat attitude". I don't get your point?!

Yes I think they are still having a go...it's a long season and this team is navigating through uncharted waters of a mental and physical kind. I agree that we have some "average" players and we do appear to be struggling to go to another level...but...the team is certainly not throwing in the towel; that's a myth that only supporters who've never laced a boot, imagine from the sidelines.

It's a supporters illusion that the players need only "want it" as much as the true fans and it will all come together. There are so many variables that need to be factored in and they point to the real issue behind recent performances. The players go out and try and put their body on the line, but they are only human and there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that impact on winning and losing. It's so easy from the sideline to think that they just all got out of bed this morning and thought "**** it, who cares if we lose today, the supporters are knobs and I don't care about this jersey".

I get all that, but there were signs early on today that we had not learnt anything from the past few weeks. And I agree, confidence is an issue, but when i played rather than imagining from the sidelines, confidence issues were addressed by exuding confidence, line speed, intent, energy, commitment, are all traits that can be maintained even if confidence is down.

Hearing words such as submission, lethargic, non plussed in commentary and in match reports today was exactly what I saw and do go hand in hand with "throwing in the towel"

There was very little apparent and obvious desire to right our season and win that game today, and it annoys me. A blip in a season is to be expected, a full blown slump is to be questioned.

Same reason as Why ? Ver1.0. We don't have a decent on field leader who can right the ship when its starts listing. We have quite a few front runners but no one that is "follow me, we can do this" come from behind type. Halves missing again and defense was crap.

Seems I was right @mave @joeboy

"We're in a hole, to be fair, and down on confidence and probably lacking a fair bit of belief," Barrett said.

"How does it happen? If everyone had the answer to that you'd be a very successful coach and it's something I've got to work out and work out quite quickly as have the players.

"Our performance [was] very lacklustre considering what we had to play for.

"We got knocked around a little bit through those Dragons and the Storm games. Put a good half together against the Roosters and looked like we were on the way back. A good half the first half against the Tigers. Confidence is a funny thing. It comes and goes quite quickly. Who knows where it goes? But we've got to find it in a hurry."
