This may vary from club to club, but (and prompted in part by alleged machinations around appointment of Manly's next coach) how is this workable:

• At least one if not several players are paid more than the head coach - yet can be disciplined by the coach?
• How about the CEO, is that person paid more than the top player(s)?
• Are the coaching staff (or even the CEO) in reality mere assistants to the star players?

At a guess Bellamy and Bennett would not be in this position but what about other coaches? Other club bosses?
Someone with experience in clubland may know the answer, to an outsider it does seem an anomaly compared with other types of organisation!

If the players are black mailing the club to influence the appointment of the coach then they are. I hope this is not true as I find it disgraceful and sickening and a fine example of the entitlement mentally of our younger generation. If true they should let the black mailers go!!!

I don’t know the answer but the first part of your post is infinitely possible!!

I put very little weight on Reading the Play, it was just a general observation about the relative values of players and officials compared with a nominal 'chain of command'.

i can liken this to my work place were me as the coal face supervisor (star player) gets paid more than the suits upstairs the manager (CEO) and engineers (coaching staff),their input is generally ignored by me for the sake of achieving targets,generally these guys a seen as ancillaries however there has been times when i have listened to engineers i felt knew their stuff (Bellamy, Bennett).
Coaches get paid their worth, if their proven success gets them more than the star players, instant respect otherwise they would need a strong personality like Hassler or Robinson, being an ex star of a club would help but one muist have that total respect of players to get to the top, i guess thats a yes (mere assistants to the star players)

There's a ton of players in North American sports that get shed loads more than their coaches. Seems to go ok there....

Jack Gibson is on record as saying he always demanded to be paid the same (or more) than the highest paid player .... but then again he had the clout ...... the best coaches can demand a premium .... the other 91% get what they can ...

A point that should be made however ... is far more coaches get paid to sit on the beach for 1 or 2 years on full pay than players do. ... I think Ricky Stuart is up to about 5 years full payout on the beach ...... that is more than a lot of players and coaches full careers ....

Players can get demoted even if they are on first grade money.

Coaching staff are there to get the players to perform at their best. But there are only 16 jobs, so they can't hold out for more monies like a player can 😎
