Well I knew he started out as a back.

The only other obvious one is Josh Perry, but I can't say with any certainty if he started out as a centre.

Clue - you have to go back further in time. Also, it isn't widely known that he started as a centre, well I certainly didn't know until I stumbled on that info.

Further clues on application 🙂

lol you guessed it. Just thought of it the other night when I was chatting with his namesake777.

From Wiki –
"Ward was a highly regarded player in both the English and Australian games. His playing strengths were considered to be his strong style of running, courageous play and ball handling skills which were respected by followers of the sport. He began his career as a Centre, but moved to the pack very quickly.

At club level, arguably his biggest career highlights were winning the 1986 Challenge Cup with Castleford, The 1987 NSWRL Premiership with Manly and the 1992 Lancashire Cup with St. Helens."

He was a formidable player, and probably the only one in history who has flown from the other side of the world to play a grand final?

I tackled this by thinking like I would if setting this. A player from the other side of the world will trick everyone. 🙂 He was the first player that came to mind and to my surprise I saw he started in the centres! Massive GF game from him.
