What would Bellamy, Hasler, Bennett - a good coach - do?

Let's not forget that whilst Bellamy is a great coach he's been blessed with having 3 of the best players ever in their positions playing for him for a decade.

Add to that he had them, plus Inglis and Filou at one stage ( agreed massively over the cap).

So sure he's had some success, and no doubt he's a great coach but you know what even our own @Technical Coach could build many teams around those 3 and be a success.
Agree with most of what you say Mark, but the thing that has always impressed me about Bellamy is that ordinary players go to the Storm and suddenly play like worldbeaters. They leave there and become ordinary again.
That's good coaching.

Look at what happened to guys that left us during the decade of dominance. They were all shadows of their former selves.

We have no one that can force a drop goal so we get a repeat set, its all kick dead and give the opposition a 7 tackle set. We cant keep the pressure on opposition defence for extended periods and tire out their big men.

Agree, but that is the coaches structure which is failing. Watch the guys kicking in the warm up. They practice low percentage kicks from rubbish positions on the field.

We pass the ball 20 metres backwards on the last to go from near the try line to trying to weight a 25 metre kick to the in goal. Our kicking set ups are just horrible.

Bennett created his aura when he had the virtual QLD State of Origin team running around for him, and oh sure he won a GF for the goons, but on the back of a very big spend on players. A better indication of his status was the uninspiring two years at Newcastle and the lack of success so far back home at the Donkeys.

And De$, well yes he could coach as well BUT he also created his aura on the back of a very very good Manly side and since leaving he's had some success but no Premiership.

Would any of the three show different results with the players we have now AND the millstone around our necks that are Stewart/Matai??

I'm sure many will disagree but I think not.

Ours is a young team, with a few journeymen and a team full of inconsistent performances, even God couldn't change that!
When a coach is on the rise and during their peak they spot/bring in/ develop the new talent that sets the standard, along with set the benchmarks in attack and defense.

A great coach tends to hold on to the base of what he created so obviously after a while it will be hard to replicate again and again due to time constraints and bigger expectations.

You can say Bellamy had the big 4 or 5 or whatever the amount but he spotted and harnessed their potential and provided the good structures to take advantage of the talent.

Des did the same at Manly but unable to do so at the Dogs, but in all honesty in some respects with the cattle he has (which is his fault to a large/certain degree) i think he has outperformed---underperformed in relation to what would of been expected of him, underperformed retention wise and talent development wise but over performed with the roster he has put together.( not good value for money with all the resources/finances the Dogs have that is for sure)

Melb wasn't the only club in the salary cap breach arms race of similar magnitudes during that period,(imho) personally i was fine with Melb getting advantages to attract and retain talent plus grow the game.

Bellamy is not just a filthy cheat, he creates a culture of grubbiness & celebrates such disgusting acts as captain scum blaming a quadriplegic for his own injuries. He has been the architect of the wrestle, the grapple, the chicken wing, the rolling pin and on and on and on.

He and his band of merry filth are nothing but a disgraceful blight on the great game of rugby league. The game should celebrate the day they retire not encourage others to be like them.

Not the architect just harnesses the above negative aspects of the game better than most.

I think he's able to get away with it because the fan base down there lack any sophisticated league knowledge so they think their style is great as it breeds results. And the NRL let it slide because a successful Melbourne franchise "grows the game".

Bellamy would sign up players to a second contract so he could have at least $1M more than the cap, Bennett would have the thoroughbreds pay outside of the cap so he can have the best depth and players money can buy. Barrett the idiot has decided to play more than $1M under the cap this year, why did he re-sign Stewart and Matai for so long even before he started?

That's a very good question @Budgewoi Eagle and I've no idea on strategy either but I too am interested in what those coaches would do.

All I can say is:
Sure as hell they'd have Brown in NYC.
Snake and Matai's retirements would've been sorted.
A rocket would've been put up Mr Plod.
Hastings would be used a whole lot more effectively.

Says it all really.

The NRL is that rigged that a supercoach can get a 30 year old Brown to be allowed to play in the National youth comp

For mine it all comes down to leadership. We lack a few hard nosed super competitive blokes out there that lead through actions and words. When the chips are down or we're huddled behind the posts after another try theres noone barking and demanding we step up. Thats why when we go MIA in games its not 5 mins...its 20-30 mins and by that stage the damage is done. Theres mental weakness there..coaching is not the issue..its the cattle. All the gun teams have great leaders that command respect and when they talk their team listens.. this we lack and until we get the right recruitment mix we'll be down the bottom
This is DCE's job but he shirks it week in week out. He is meant to be a leader but he is passive and just stands on the right of the ruck waiting in case the ball comes to him. He should be barking and directing traffic and coming onto the ball hard like Cooper Cronk, Mitchell Pearce and Jonathan Thurston do...you have to do things at pace.

I wonder why our game forgives cheats like Bellamy, Slater, Smith, Inglis and Gallen etc but hang out Shandor Earle to dry and forever label innocents like Brett Stewart.

It's got me ****ed.

I'd like to nominate that for " post of the year" @Dan , and if we don't have a post of the year ( which I know we don't) we should!!!
