Weidler - Manly - Titmuss DCE

“Rumours of a switch to Canterbury” has anyone else heard of this rumour?Theres always been rumours around DCE,99% of the time they’re false.May I suggest that the rumour was started by Weidler just for his story?

Danny boy must of worked where I do at some point as we have a saying.

if you haven’t heard a rumour by 9am start one.

Such an easy job being a reporter, you can write any crap you want without having any facts as long as you use a few certain words. Alleged, Appeared or rumoured will get you out of trouble and no need to name a source.

Eagles rocked

When you watch the way Manly are performing you can’t discount the effect the tragic passing of Keith Titmuss has had on the players. The 20-year-old collapsed and suffered a seizure following a pre-season training session and later died in hospital.

Many of Titmuss’ best mates were there and watched it happen.

The significant impact it had on the training staff is also still being felt. It is not the main reason for the Sea Eagles’ dreadful 0-4 start to the season, but you need to remember the effect his death has had on vulnerable young men.

Daly Cherry-Evans is the easy target at Manly because of his position and pay packet. It has even led to rumours of a switch to Canterbury to play under his old coach, Trent Barrett. That story is not coming from DCE. Cherry-Evans wants to lead Manly out of their slump, not look for a new start. He is committed to staying with Manly and seeing the club through this tough patch.

Though there is a lot of supposition in what Weidler is saying, I do recall the impact the death of Ben Alexander had on the Penrith club in late June 1992. This was a team being coached by Phil Gould that had won the premiership the year before and were sitting in 3rd position when this happened. This team included Greg Alexander, Steve Carter, John Cartwright, Brad Fittler, Mark Geyer, Brad Izzard and Ben Farrar. They lost six of their last nine games that season and slumped to 9th. The following year they came 12th.

I'm not saying Ben's death caused the failing of that premiership winning side alone, but I remember how traumatised it was suggested the side were. Like Titmuss he was a very popular young player on the rise yet to make his first grade debut. I don't think you can easily dismiss the emotional impact.

I’m sure it was terrible for the lads and remain with them for a long time.
Problem with that theory is they were playing in exactly the same fashion way before young Keith passed.

Point taken Susan. I was only trying to suggest it also could be a factor. But you are quite valid is your estimation of their efforts before that tragedy, of which we can recall too well last year and especially the second half of last year. Seems, though, to me they are playing worse than even last year.

Yep they are Bear and I’m sure Keith’s passing has been a one of the factors, just not the prime one.To me the reasons are obvious - we pick players who are not suitable for the new game and coach players like they are playing in 2019.

Would the replacements be any better? To me that question doesn’t matter. You know the current ones aren’t , time to find out about the others and then you can plan a roster. Keep picking proven failures and we learn nothing and can’t move on.

There is no doubt that losing young Keith and witnessing what happened has been a hammer blow to the squad.

I understand the club suspended training for two weeks to ensure that the playing group got all the help they needed to try and come to terms with what happened.

In time things will improve and the horror start to the season is something that is not totally unexpected when you consider the draw we had to cope with.

The only way this will change and improve is we see the basics being done better!! I saw the Bulldogs game and even though they got spanked right royally for 60 minutes they competed really well. We must start doing this more consistently and wear teams down as this is the way with the new rules.

I think its very important right now that the club doesnt say too much off the field, just knuckles down, starts working harder and let their performances do the talking!

Still think self belief is a factor. One of many. As Susan suggested it doesnt matter if the players who replace them dont perform as well as we would hope. What's important is to try new things, new combinations, new enthusiastic young players. This should be a building year. They wont win the premiership this year, but they can build and establish the foundation for a new era that will lead to potential premierships. It wont happen while Des refuses to take the risks and make the changes that are necessary. If it fails then at least they've tried and then they try something else. Inertia is our worst enemy.
