Sometimes it seems like nice guys don’t just finish last. They get relegated, too.
Geoff Toovey’s appointment this week as the coach of the reborn Bradford Bulls is enough to reassure us that after all that happens, nice guys also get a second chance.
As a reporter, I’ve been dealing with Toovey since before his first grade debut – which was against the 1988 Great Britain Lions. He scored a try that night in a 30-0 win for the home side at Brookvale Oval. In his 145 games for Manly and the Northern Eagles, it’s doubtful he faced too many men smaller than him. Or braver.
