Ummm I might be a bit slow on the uptake here but I don't get what you are trying to get at here.

For example, this is where we came:

2007: 2nd (Runner up)
2008: 2nd (Premiers)
2009: 5th (Out first round)
2010: 8th (Out first round)
2011: 2nd (Premiers)
2012: 4th (Out week 3)

The premiers came from the following positions:

2007: 1st
2008: 2nd
2009: 4th
2010: 1st
2011: 2nd
2012: 2nd

Finally, where did the Premiers come the next year:

2007: (Brisbane) 8th
2008: (Melbourne) 1st
2009: (Manly) 5th
2010: (Melbourne) 16th
2011: (Dragons) 5th
2012: (Manly) 4th

The only point I see you trying to make is that Melbourne didn't win in 2009 and therefore, because they knocked us out, we should have been premiers (from 5th place). This is completely incorrect as we don't know what would have happened if things were different.

Well here's one to look forward to if history's right : the beaten grand finalists don't make the 8 the year after.

Both failed to make the 8 the year after there gf appearance

I think the point was, as defending premiers, we finished 4th this season. The last defending premiers finished 5th.

In fact, we were the best placed defending premiers since Penrith in 2004 (legal anyway)............and showing just how hard it is to back up the following season after winning a comp (legally anyway).

We are now all but guaranteed a spot in the finals. A home win against the Knights next week will seal the deal.

The disintegration of the NZ Warriors is a reminder of just how hard it is these days for a grand final team to back up the following year.

Since the 2004 decider, (ignoring Melbourne in the years they were found to have cheated) only 5 of the 13 grand final teams have even made it into the Top 8 the following season.

Brisbane in '07 limped into 8th and lost their qualifying final 40-nil. Illawarra in '11 also limped into finals).

This year will be the THIRD time in that period Manly has backed up from a grand final to make the finals again the next year.

Dogs, Tigers, Cowboys, Eels, Roosters (twice) and now the poor old Warriors are overwhelming evidence that - even if we don't go all the way this year - we can still be proud of what the team is achieving.
