the decision to cut Gagner is more surprising given he was signed to a three-year, $9.45 million contract in the summer of 2017.

Gagner scored 31 points for the Canucks in 2017-18. He scored one goal during 2018 pre-season.

If clears and is assigned to the AHL, Gagner will still cost the Canucks a cap hit of $2.1 million. Teams only get a maximum of $1.05 million in cap relief when assigning one-way contracts to the minors; Gagner’s cap hit for this season is $3.15 million.
