My view on his greatness is in the thinkers he has produced. Many coaches can get a pack assembled, slick footwork but the ability to play footy in your dinner suite was always thought to be the gift of time. So has the storm recruited an ensemble of gifted players or have they spotted determined men and given them gifts. Cronk, smith, green , widdop in recent years and players like scott hill and robbie ross. They have always played within themselves a bit, some in dinner suits because they thought of footy as a game rather than a contest of rugby league. it appears to me it can be taught if you want to kearn it

Even a player like ryan hoffman who was a gun at the blindside kick chase was always thinking and on the ball.

Tackling, holding , wresting, and every other storm tactic is a complete understanding of "the game" as opposed to trying to outplay your opponent at footy. To negotiate 80 minutes on a footy field, with a max of 13 players at a time , and then end up with more points every game.store energy by using the footy field like a snakes and ladders board, by kicking smartly and flexing the rules. Oh and heres the footy.

Bennett.
Another master coach plays his footy waaay differenty, generally with potent backlines, quick spreads and a very attacking football as opposed to playing the game

Most people , however succesful bellamys tactics are , hate "the game " but admire it, but Everyone loves bennett style footy when he is hot. They are true entertainers. No right, no wrong, but everyone has a preference

Our last great squad with lyon, matai, choc, gifty, snake , kitey just had a **** tonne of elite footballers in one era. DEs magic as a coach was undoubatly keeping them together so we could bask for a decade. We may be 20 years before we can stack a team of absolute champions together like that . The fact that many of these champions were constantly overlooked for rep jerseys was a great advantage to us as fans. This is kinda getting me to my point

In the last 15 years or so melbournes tactic have only been challenged by some truely exceptionally stacked sides. On paper far more stacked all over the park , in fact like manlys era and now the chooks, with souths stocking up on gun backs like a rush for dunny rolls its pretty much storms spine then daylight

I think of how bellamy transformed some players with waaaay less natural ability into players that are exponentially more important to a sides outcome on a consistent basis.

His greatness grew with his ability to manage a game and when he did the cowboys became a title threat instead of unlucky bail outs in week 2. It strikes me that we seem a bit similar currently. I suspect his eductaion was helped in the qld camp. The storm trio and thurston really gelled and thurston as player became better and better and seemed to nderstand the game

Des is the coach and he is far more qualified than me . i respect his choices 100%. Has to work with what he has but cherry often takes 20 minutes to get into games and by then so much effort work has happened and our danger props are getting ready to spell , he is a really good footy player but can someone send him a halfback for dummies guide NOW. as skilful , dedicated and educated as he is, it seems to me the top players have out thought him before he take the field. Cherry might yet reach out to benji marshall and ask him how he turned from being an enigmatic player with the skills to a proper halfback but you would suspect that improvement will need to star showing soon

just an opinion . Sure he is gifted but seems to ignore the golden rules of having the number 7 on your back and thats not cool for me

We all hate Bellyache but he’s a gifted coach.

Yeah I know he failed at Origin but I think that’s different.

His players just do their job and do it well ( not spectacularly) and they then rely on Scam / Munster to create the magic.

We all hate the Drizzle but I wonder is that really envy more that hate??

Id buy his book if he wrote one. Read it in a day and then send it to someone i think needs it

No Mark, it’s hate for the cheating scum; actually hate is probably a bit strong, probably just an overall dislike but definitely not envy.

I really don’t like the cheap shot artists that they’ve always had and still have, e.g. the Fijian winger and Kafusi.

Agree , but it’s all part of his training ( they’ve been doing it for years ) and I’m not saying I like it , I don’t BUT you have to admire how successful all these tactics have made his teams.

My admiration for Bellamy's success is offset by my hatred for what he and his teams have done to the game. The wrestle and bull**** they put into every tackle makes my blood boil. But man, he has a knack for getting players to do exactly what they're supposed to do, to the best of their abilities. He turned Cronk into a top-class half and it looks like he's doing the same to Jahrome Hughes. He looked very good on Sunday and his kicks were Cronk-like in their precision. Prick.

I wonder if he could polish DCE's kicking game if he had him? It raises the hairs on my neck to imagine what DCE would be with a couple of those Bellamy polishing touches... particularly kicking and consistently executing a game plan.

The DCE bashing after a loss is getting pretty old

Good post mate. DCE has always reminded me of the little girl with a curl on her forehead. When he is good, he is very, very good, but when he is bad he is horrid.

Has struggled often to manage games, grind out wins and really take ownership in tight contests. His shortcomings get wallpapered over somewhat because he has come up with miracle wins in the past, especially with the field goal clutch play. But too often I see other games where he takes bad options, kicks poorly, finds himself at dummy half when he should be at first receiver, or poorly positioned off the ruck so he lets the defence put pressure on him ...... lots of little things in his game that the really good players don't fall victim to. I didn't see yesterday's game, but reading between the lines on here I assume it was a C Smith masterclass and a below par DCE effort. The elite players are thinking two plays ahead, DCE's strength is playing off the cuff behind a dominant pack that are making metres. He has finally cracked Origin and hopefully that helps his development as a player, but with no Smith, Thurston or Cronk in that set up now I don't know where that mentoring comes from.

Anyway early days in the season, so let's see what Dessie can conjure up and what DCE can improve on as he matures. My confidence for this year stems from our efforts in last years final series, with a team that was missing Turbo and our first choice backrow. Downside is that it's clear the loss of Fainu is a big one, but maybe we need to give Levi a few games to get into our style of play and build those combinations.

Great try assist throwing the pass to Tom.
Kicked the match winning field goal.

Great player wouldn’t want any other half in the game at the moment

He iced the game today :) Not sure what’s happening with the little bombs, often our players can’t get there in time to put pressure on. Walker’s kicking game was good today.

Lest actually look at DCE and his career.

Burst onto the scene in 2011 in a team of champions. Won a premiership.
Was touted as a QLD and Australian Legend very early on.
Fell out with the QLD clique for whatever reason.
Did the backflip after manly powerbrokers originally ****ed him over in favour of foran.
Won the Clive churchill medal in a losing side in 2014. was best on field and we should have won that GF given the forward pass fiasco.
That champion ferrari side replaced with ford escort side.
Had a rookie coach in TB that couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag. a man who also decided he was going to change his game to make him a thurston type player.
Is now the current QLD and Aust Half.
Can kick a mean field goal in the crunch.
Gets absolutely hammered from pretty well every side all the time. especially on here.

Im a big DCE supporter. He has the odd issue in his game but hes not that bad. keep doing what your doing Cap!

Bellyache is a gifted coach and Losing a grand final to a record score of 40 points to Nil against Des is something that will haunt him for the rest of his life .

If he doesn't kick that field goal yesterday how many people think he had a good game ? How many other players in our team get a chance to kick field goals ? What if Walker slots the winner yesterday ?

Pointing out that he had a below par game doesn't mean you hate the guy, it just means you think he had a below par game.

What-ifs are well and good, but DCE actually nailed it and it's not so easy to do, even Keary missed his clear shot.
Sure DCE wasn't my man of the match (not even in my top 3) but we wouldn't have won without him. He just doesn't seem to be the Thurston or Johns type who takes control of everything. However, not many ever have been!

The thing about DCE is he has always played his best footy when he had an organiser at 5/8. Means he can just play his natural game.

Foran was a fantastic halves partner for him (alsp had an amazing team around him).

He also had a good season woth Green, cause green was solid 5/8 eith good game mgmt and a short kicking game.

A number of seasons he has had to try carry the team.

Walker is growing into a solid partner and it helped DCE today.

I do wonder if we should bring up schuey.

If walker keeps performing like he did yesterday he's go the job for this year at least. If he gets hurt or stumbles, good to know we could try the kid.
