Voss commentary

Yeah.... it wasn't real good.

I've said a few times that the hockey - you usually get your own callers if it is a home game (depending on which tv company has brought the rights now, I guess).

So the commentary is usually slightly biased towards the home team, but at the detriment of bagging the other team for 60 mins.

But what you don't get, and what Voss was doing last night was:

Oh parra are only 10 behind...there's a chance
Oh parra are only 16 behind....there's a chance
Oh parra are only.....there's a chance
there's a chance
there's a chance
there's a chance

It was rubbish.

About the only non glow he did was when he said "Dylan Brown has put his running game away this half for some reason." (oooooh cutting)

There was even a time when the parra player picked up the ball in his in-goal...ran sideways and only just got out.
Voss was commentating in the vein that it was a good effort and well done getting 30 cm into the field of play. Where as when I rewound it....if he just ran straight and not sideways, he would've made 5 metres or so.

Either way - the nrl don't have home team commentators so instead of saying how Manly aren't doing that well because they aren't in the lead by 40, yet Parra are doing well as they are only behind...whatever it was at the stage, he needs to be more neutral.

But I bet no one tells him.

I’m not a fan of Voss but he’s not biased or have an issue with Manly. He just goes with the agenda that’s going to be the biggest story for the week.A Parra loss sees them sitting 0-4,Parra win and there’s either the Eels winning angle or the bigger story,Manly losing after the DCE saga.As for the “there’s a chance….” lines, that’s the old Kerry Packer technique of not giving the viewer a reason to switch channels(I doubt the tactic was solely started by Packer, but it’s the tale I remember from yrs ago when something happened in the cricket)

As opposed to the Ray Warren technique of just call the bloody game

That’s right, although Rabs did show his age towards the end where he was making mistakes or turning every game into a “This Is Your Life” episode and gave us a full run down of a players story.
Voss is either going over the top, trying to be a Daryl Somers type host or setting up the agenda for the week for his radio program

I agree that he 'probably' doesn't have an agenda against manly - unless it's 'most people don't fancy manly so if I beat up on them a little then that makes better "tv"'.

I don't agree with you that his incessant glorification of parra's chances, or play was a packer technique.

And that's ok.

When Rex Mossop was reigning NRL TV Shows People thought he was Manly Bias
When Arko was running the NRL game People thought he was bias
I do not believe Mossop , Arko or Voss are Bias

Not sure when it happened, maybe in the 80’s,but someone in the commentary booth of the cricket, said words to the effect that the game was over and no chance of whoever it was of winning the game.Packer was on the phone in a flash and threatened the commentator with immediate sacking if he said anything like that again and the commentator started talking up the chances of the struggling team straight away, despite the perilous position they were in.Either Packer or someone else said he didn’t want anyone switching off the game because of the impression that the game was a forgone conclusion

Oh, I definitely believe packer said that. 100%

Voss is just a negative mindset commentator. He will wax lyrical about all the reasons tries are not tries instead of celebrating the fact that someone has done the impossible and managed to score against all odds. He then brings his commentary partner into the same mindset. Its really poor.

Yep, that was Big Kezza for sure. Remember when he pulled the plug on Uncle Doug Mulray when he fronted that episode of Australia’s naughtiest videos. I remember watching it, then nothing. Next minute Cheers appeared. Of course back in the olden days we had to wait till the following day (usually the afternoon paper edition) to find out what happened.
* How the hell do I remember that, yet I couldn’t tell you what I had for breakfast yesterday!

Yeah I knew Packer delivered that message but can’t remember who the cricket commentator was, definitely not the great Richie Benaud
