Vale Glenn Thorpe

Sad to report the loss of a early Sea Eagle in Glenn Thorpe who passed away on Thursday aged 83.
Glenn was a prop or second rower who played 16 1st grade games for Manly between 54-55 plus other years in the lowers.
He is the dad of an old mate of mine and a more Manly family could never be met.
Thoughts , prayers and good memories.

Sorry for your loss and your mates.

Thanks Harvies. My first fulltime job was with State (Rural) Bank in the early 1980s at their HQ in Oxford St. On the first day they took me to an office & left me with my new boss. It was Mr Thorpe. He always came across as a fine gentleman and strong leader. I learned somewhere along the line from someone that he had played for Manly but he never big noted himself about it.

My condolences to his family.

Yes spot on Bris.
Indeed a gentleman. In fact hard to believe he played prop in the era that he did. But a big , quiet strong bloke who you just respected. He'll always be Mr Thorpe to me and I'll not forget when he found out I supported Manly ( I was about 8) he looked me in the eye and said " that's the spirit ".
And it was,
And always will be.

Picture of the 1954 Reserve Grade Premiers. This was the first Manly team to win a premiership in any grade. Glenn Thorpe is top row, far right. Many of these players went on to play first grade.

Wow, some good'uns. Reub Hudson, John Tenison and Lenon all were still involved with the club in the 70's.

Whatever happened to Reub Hudson Oval, it was going to be the Junior Rugby League's official ground but last I saw it there was Rugby Union playing on it.

Another old photo: First Grade match Manly v Western Suburbs at the SCG, April 16 1955. Glenn Thorpe tackles West's Bill Carson. Bill played for Australia and later became President of the Western Suburbs club. The Manly player on the left is Roy Bull who also played for Australia and later became President of the Manly Warringah club. Manly won 46-0.
