NSW have inquired about the fitness of Manly superstar Tom Trbojevic as they weigh up their options in the absence of
injured South Sydney centre Latrell Mitchell.
Trbojevic made his return from a long-term hamstring injury
against North Queensland in Townsville last night, his comeback launched only hours after it emerged that Mitchell had been ruled out of the final State of Origin game with a foot injury.
Mitchell will be out for at least a month and a meeting with specialists this week will determine whether he requires surgery, which would likely end his season.
Making his return in the centres, Trbojevic made 13 runs for 70 metres. He also made 23 tackles.
It is understood NSW officials reached out to their Manly counterparts on Sunday morning to see how Trbojevic pulled up after his comeback match.
He was considered one of the contenders to replace Mitchell alongside Newcastle’s Bradman Best, Sydney Roosters’ Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and the Bulldogs’ Matt Burton.
The Blues have no shortage of options but Trbojevic will come under serious consideration given his standing in the game and the fact he has never let down his state in the past.
Tom’s brother Jake Trbojevic will captain the Blues again in the decider at Suncorp Stadium while Sea Eagles second rower Haumole Olakau’atu will also be part of the Blues squad as they look to secure the series on foreign and hostile territory.
