It's to do with nouns and whether they end in consonants with a 'y' at the end or not. Given 'try' is a consonant followed 'y', you add 'ies'. If it was toy, it's a vowel followed by 'y', you just add the 's'.

Yep, “versed” & “versing” instead of “played” & “playing” is another one.

Like “what’s the degrees?” instead of “what’s the temperature?”
