" thinking more of a defence-minded player " isn't every forward a defence minded player when defending. All forwards should have a point of difference, from what I saw from Navale he doesn't seem to have one. Anyway, that's just my opnion.

All I meant was I see Navale's strength as being more as a tackling machine style of forward, rather than a dangerous hole-runner or blockbusting tackle breaker. A Fatty not a Crusher, if you know what I mean.

And I think Manly could certainly use another tackling machine type at present (especially given some doubt about Croker's spot, not to mention concerns several have voiced about Jake's longevity).

Taniela Paseka will be available for Round 1 in the NRL Premiership after sustaining a minor injury in Saturday’s Pre-season Challenge match against the Rabbitohs.

The Sea Eagles prop left the field clutching his left shoulder but has since been cleared of serious damage, suffering a grade one AC joint injury.

I think we need to find a way to get rid of one if not two of these three (Garrick,Saab ,Koula)
Hoppa needs to be in the team & Faulalo should be in the mix as a cheaper option than the 3 mentioned.
WOW...talk about throwing a handgrenade in the mix, that's an explosive post robbiea.
Getting rid of one is huge enough, but 2..yikes !!.
Waiting for the fallout on this one...lol.

That was a poor attempt Wheel you have two weeks to sort it 🤭
He's got two ro

They are Manly's 3 fastest players, so keep them all. No need to re-visit the Matt Wright and Brad Parker days. Its a no from me.

Didn't occur to me he was seen as a line busting forward or a Bullemor type.

I was thinking more a defence-minded player with good technique and stamina, capable of keeping the middle tight over long minutes. Competent rather than threatening in attack.

Which, with our plethora of star backs, could be exactly what we need.

For this year, possibly allowing Jake to play reduced minutes? Maybe in competition with Brown for a bench spot as the season progresses.
Same + a quick play the ball.

What did everyone think of Navale's game on Saturday.
I thought he looked very fit, tackled well, attack wise, not a lot of impact tbh, looks to have lost a few kg's since last year. Navale needs to add more bulk and be that line busting forward that we all thought he was going to be.

Navale has never been a tackle busting impact player. He is very much cut from the same cloth as Jake but at a fraction of the price. He has a very high work rate and tackle efficiency. Has great footwork and also has silky hands as the point of our attack came from Navale distributing the ball vs Souths.
He just can’t wack as hard as Jake in defence but not many people can.
I thought he was very impressive given his roll and strengths he brings to the team.

I was particularly interested in watching Chris Patolo in action on Saturday. Got to say somewhat underwhelming compared to what I was expecting. Limited minutes I know and he did nothing wrong but after watching the videos on the guy, I was certainly expecting more from him. On that performance, no way he makes the 17 in 25. Am I being too harsh here on the young guy?
a tad harsh - given limited oportunities but agree we need to see him getting better each game

Only just got to watch the game, thought it was a good overall performance.
Lehi was classy at the back.
Ray was Ray,hits hard, runs hard, becoming a consistent performer.(still an error in his game)
Faulalo is a classy, smart, skillful player, need to get him re-signed asap, defensively he and Willett were very good on the right.
Schoupp was solid, ran hard, looked to give them a whack in defense.
Willett has pretty good speed, not Saab like but is pretty athletic for a guy so tall, reckon he will be a good signing.
Matterson cops some stick, but both he and Arthur were good.
Good vision with his passing, good defense, some good short kicks and tucked it and took the hit when the defense gave him nothing.
Arthur is not much of a runner, but showed good passing on both sides, solid kicking game, good organiser and defender.
Really happy with Taukeiaho in his first game, doesn't tear into the line, but he has short, choppy, quick steps, with good ability to get between defenders and keep the legs pumping to get more metres and a quick play the ball.Could turn out to be a good pick up if stays healthy.
Simpkin was good,good passing,had a dart,good defender.
Got to say I thought Toff was average, not a lot from him as captain.
Really liked Navale, good defense, really quick and accurate as a link man and takes his runs, thought his running game was even better in his second stint.
Thought Gordie was actually pretty good, busted the line and looks more solid in defense.
Patolo was solid and a good debut.
James is leaner than last year, but doesn't seem to really push the defensive line.
Dunford looked athletic and a player on the left edge.
Swann was aggressive and might be a useful pick up at centre.
Pua'Avase looks a little slow footed, not sure how he will go this year.
Got to admit I was impressed with Hugo Hart in his stint on the left edge, not overawed at all stepping up from Ball, looked physical in defense and looked to get involved and run strongly with the ball, looks a real prospect.

I watched Dunford and I found it hard on what to make of his run, looked fitter with the offseason behind him, ran some good lines as a decoy runner and was solid in defence. Had a few runs with the ball and did well.

He was rated fairly high for the sting in his tackles coming through the pathways system, 2 years ago he signed that 3 year deal with the Raiders and decided to stay at Manly around mid 2022.

Did an ACL in 2023 and had 15 games in NSW cup last season, was told he had a good offseason and could push for an opportunity this season, fingers crossed he stays injury free to do this and get a game against the Panthers on Friday.
