Crusher Cleal and I go way back to North West NSW days and the Warialda Wombats and the Moree Boars, and when they were building the Eagles after the disastrous 2002-3 period he said this to me.

" Mate we need a forward leader, a half leader and a backs leader, and around them we can build a team for a shot at a GF in 5 years"

This was in 2004, at the Group 5 Grand Final between the Jamie Lyon lead Wee Waa Panthers and the Scott Fulton led Moree Boars.

He told me then the first step was Kite, and that we had to wait a few years until Jamie's ESL sojourn was over to have our backs leader.

History shows that we later bought Orford and we had our " big 3".

I think we are in an almost similar situation in 2016 as we were then, 12 years ago.

Killer and Jamie are at the end of their careers, and in essence we need to " start again".

Whilst we still have the likes of those mentioned above ( and Matt Ballin) , we need to look for future talent, then buy the new '" big 3" and so begin the build for the next Golden era.

By then the Rorters and Vermin's eras will be over, one thing we have proven is nothing lasts forever.

Jamie still has quite a few years left I hope. Or is the knee injury a lot worse and the might be back this week line just a crock o

Certainly I think he has more than this year BUT he won't be there for our next " Decade of Dominance".

I hope that both he & Skivvy play their final games with us and announce retirement at the same time, will be hard to replace but that's when you chuck the cheque book at the best centre coming off contract to help with that next era.

I doubt Skivi will last as long as Jamie, more likely to go about the same time as Killer

In regards to next year , is anyone totally against the idea of (providing we need a new 5/8 next year) slotting Jamie Lyon into 5/8 , Hiku to centre and slotting whoever is best (Wolfman , Taufua, Williame , Blair , Gutherson , Tom T) onto the wings.,

That way we will only need to get a new half back , hopefully Elgey. Plus also allows more money for the main things that we lack and that are big (decent) forwards who can put some fear into the opposition.

Feel free to be totally against the suggestion !

It's an option, but I'd rather give JLJ a go and see what he can do as he is a specialist half. Jamie looked off first week, but is usually vital for us out wide in attack and defense. Jamie's kicking game and passing game wont worry too much defense. I didn't like when we move him out of center, thats where he plays his best football

Not a young player by any means, but Nate "I am not an octopus" Myles has not been secured by the Titans for next year yet. Cherry must not rate him. lol

He turns 30 this year, and will probably still play rep footy....

Man, I wish we were so broke that the NRL had to save us! Then we could buy whoever we want too!!

Broncos move to retain rising star Ofahengaue

Courier Mail
– March 12, 2015
Broncos bolter Joe Ofahengaue is embroiled in a contract tug-of-war with Queensland rivals the Titans attempting to poach Brisbane’s hottest young forward property.

Wayne Bennett will blood the off-contract Ofahengaue on Friday night against the Sharks, but the Brisbane coach is facing a battle to retain the nephew of Wallabies great Willie ‘O’.

The 19-year-old is regarded as a future superstar and his potential has been detected by the Titans, who want Ofahengaue running off new recruit Daly Cherry-Evans next season.

It is understood the Titans’ offer is very lucrative for an unproven teenager, but the Broncos have a history of keeping players they want and have no plans to lose Ofahengaue.

Jamie is 33, so 34 next year - it will be his last I think. So we would just have to find another 5/8 anyway. Best to leave him at centre until he retires and get a 5/8 replacement now IMO.

We should just follow the Phil Gould way. Really has borne fruit.

oops.

I'm sure they will resign Nate. He has just been given the Captaincy. He is their forward leader. A type of player we need as we don't have any forward leaders. Glen Stewert was our leader. Need another type of player like him, but hard to find. Sam Burgess was great for Souths last year, and SBW for the chooks the year before. So important to have these types of players on your team. Titans don't have a bad pack, Bird (although an idiot off the field) is another leader for NSW and Australia and James is underrated. Got some good young players coming through under 20s. Not sure it's better to go after a really expensive top signing, or poach a few young kids that are rising stars and build over a period of a couple of years.

We need to go strongly after Tom Burgess. He is only 22 and i can only see improvement in him.

Have to review my players to target. Sims re-signed today with Knights and Nappa looks like he is close to signing with Rorters.
Half - Elgey
Prop - Tom Burgees
Back row - Docker
Forward Leader - Nate Myles - not young, but still could play another 3 years and was one of QLD best last year.

They need to go hard after Sam Burgess. If it's true he wants out of rugby, Souths are capped out I'd assume, especially as upgrades kick in over the next few years.

A halves pairing of Moses Mbye and Kane Elgey would be decent; young, fast, and creative. We can offer Moses more money than Canterbury and a guaranteed first grade spot.
