Johnathan Thurston arrested in Brisbane
Queensland State of Origin halfback Johnathan Thurston has apologised for his late night antics which saw the NRL superstar locked up in the Brisbane watchhouse this morning.
His team, the North Queensland Cowboys, has also apologised to club stakeholders.
‘‘Both the club and player acknowledge that his alleged behaviour was unbecoming of a player of his standing and as a representative of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys,’’ the statement read.
‘‘The board and management of the club express their disappointment with Johnathan’s actions and advise that he will be required to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
‘‘The Cowboys maintain strict player behaviour protocols and are committed to ensuring that players understand their commitment to members, sponsors and the community.’’
The contrite Cowboys captain flew back to Townsville after being released following his early-morning arrest on a public nuisance charge.
Thurston told reporters at Townsville Airport he was sorry for the drama and apologised to his fans.
‘‘You know I shouldn’t have put myself in that position,’’ he said.
The Cowboys playmaker was kicked out of Brisbane's Treasury Casino before he was arrested.
A spokeswoman for the venue said the North Queensland Cowboys captain was asked to leave after disturbing patrons with a walking crutch.
Thurston and two other men had been at the casino for about an hour when they were advised to leave about 3.40am.
''He consented to all requests and was polite to security guards," a statement from the casino said.
''His actions at the time provided no indication he was intoxicated.''
Thurston and another man, reported to be former Brisbane lower grade player Nathan Daley, were arrested outside the casino about 4.15am.
Police officers were called to the intersection of Queen and George streets in the Brisbane CBD "regarding a disturbance involving two men".
Queensland Origin player and fellow Cowboy Willie Tonga was also reportedly at the scene of the disturbance but wasn't arrested.
Police spoke to the group and Thurston allegedly laughed at the officers, Channel Nine reported.
It has also been suggested that Thurston and Daley were wrestling near a taxi and ignored police calls to stop.
Police have confirmed two men from Townsville, aged 27 and 25, have been charged with public nuisance.
Thurston and the second man were held at a Brisbane watchhouse before being released about 7.30am.
The Cowboys playmaker departed without commenting to the media.
Australian rugby league captain Darren Lockyer said Thurston would be "pretty shattered right now".
"It's not great timing," Lockyer told Nine.
"Obviously he is coming back from an injury and he wants to press his claims for a Test jersey in the Four Nations this year.
"It's not good but I've known Johnathan for a long time, he's a decent bloke and we'll just have to not pass judgment on it till we know the full details."
North Queensland media spokesman Timothy Nugent said the club was not willing to comment at this stage.
Thurston was charged with public drunkenness after being arrested outside his flat semi-naked in 2008.
The two men are due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on October 6.

MARK COLVIN: There's more trouble for the Brisbane Broncos rugby league team this afternoon.
A Brisbane nightclub has released to the ABC closed circuit television footage which records what it calls alcohol-fuelled bad behaviour.
The nightspot alleges that a man seen on the CCTV footage grabbing the nightclub's owner is the Broncos' Captain Darren Lockyer.
The football club is yet to respond.
Three Broncos players already face allegations that they sexually assaulted a woman in the toilet of another Brisbane nightclub.
Annie Guest reports.
ANNIE GUEST: Days out from a semi-final, the atmosphere around the Brisbane Broncos rugby league team is more problematic than positive.
On Monday three players were accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub toilet on the weekend.
Today, the ABC has obtained footage from another nightclub called Casablanca. It was taken 10 days ago during an evening when the nightclub says it refused to serve Broncos players, concerned they were drunk.
But they allegedly helped themselves to drinks in an icebox on the bar, leaving $80 as payment, and tried to leave with the bottles.
The nightclub says a man that is seen on the CCTV footage manhandling the nightclub's owner is the Bronco's Captain Darren Lockyer.
Casablanca's manager Sarosh Mehta describes it as a semi-tackle.
SAROSH MEHTA: The manager, obviously doing the right thing as per our Liquor Act and licence conditions, went over there and asked for them to be returned.
He was basically just pushed aside I would say, that would be the easiest way I can describe it, somewhat of a semi-tackle.
ANNIE GUEST: The nightclub's owner has told the ABC he felt threatened, and was furious. He says he's considering legal action.
The footage clearly shows people that the nightclub says are Broncos players taking drinks outside.
Casablanca's manager Sarosh Mehta says it's poor behaviour.
SAROSH MEHTA: Of all people, they're our heroes, they're our national heroes, they need to set an example and a good role-model for the younger people that they should be focusing on.
The last thing they need to do is to be seen in public behaving in this manner because what does it tell the rest of the society, that it's cool? It's not cool; it's totally irresponsible, and especially a few days away from such an important match that's coming up now on Suncorp on Saturday.
ANNIE GUEST: The Casablanca nightclub warns if there's more trouble the Bronco's will be banned. Another Brisbane bar announced today it is banning footballers.
The owner of the Uber nightspot Jim Davies has placed the ban on all footballers after a North Queensland Cowboys player was charged with causing damage in the bar last week.
But on the specific allegations against the Broncos the ABC is yet to hear back from the Club, which it offered a response earlier this afternoon.
It's already busy carrying out an internal investigation into allegations against three players. They're accused of sexually assaulting a young woman in the toilet of a Brisbane nightclub.
On that subject, and prior to hearing the allegations against him, this morning the Captain Darren Lockyer this morning backed his Club's decision not to drop the players from this weekend's semi-final game.
DARREN LOCKYER: Everyone gets after things such as this happens, you have regrets, you know, so there's always lesson to be learned; so yeah, I'm sure there was.
ANNIE GUEST: Last month the Cronulla rugby league club stood a player down after he was charged with assault by police.
But the National Rugby League's Chief Executive David Gallop says he won't force the Broncos to follow.
DAVID GALLOP: By and large we have seen clubs impose penalties, we've seen contracts terminated, we've seen a range of fines.
It's important that clubs maintain the education session that they're running. Clubs have generally acted responsibly when these types of situations have come up.
ANNIE GUEST: The Broncos players have reportedly declared they are innocent of the sexual assault allegations.
