No premiership since 2011? That's on DCE.

Yep..you read correctly

Very coincidental but the more I see of DCE and how he's gone about his latest contract fiasco the more it takes me back to his Titans backfill and how destabilising it was for the club then.

Basically DCE plays for DCE and its never been about a team for him.. he won a premiership off the back of players who played for the team and each other, many of who took pay cuts to stay together as they were winners. They bled for each other and took the wins and losses together.

DCE has led our great club.. but a team is only as good as it's leader and we are now seeing that DCE never really had the team or the club at heart..it has and was always about DCE.

Even in his twilight were he could have left the game a one club legend, set to go down in history he chose himself and his greed to forever tarnish his legacy.

We havnt won a premiership since he made it "his team" and sadly we are now seeing why. As one of his staunchest supporters I too was decieved.

Listening to the podcast in 2018 when Watmough spilled his guts it definitely seems like DCE was the catalyst for the playing group falling apart after 2011. We have been trying to push $#!t uphill ever since and not really looked likely.

DCE leaving and the Turbo bros taking pay cuts are going to be very important pieces of the puzzle in my opinion.

Turbo had already tried to take a pay cut so other team mates could be retained ( and that was only squashed by the NRL) and I would find it hard to even think Jake wouldn't do the same.
These are what team mates and club first players are all about.
And they are the type of players needed to win premierships.

DCE has lead teams to SOO Winning Series in the most competitive arena in the NRL
He is a Proven Leader
He Lead Manly Teams to Finals footy
He even lead Brooks to his first final series
Brooks could not lead the tigers to the finals in the decade he was there
This is why Brooks is the discounted half Mestrov could only secure

Bob Fulton the Greatest player and only Manly Immortal Never ever took pay cuts and he has won more grand finals as player and coach for Manly than anyone one in the history of our Legendary club

DCE had the (c) beside his name in a team full of representative players, but others were running those teams. So,much like the only premiership he has won, there were more influential players around him.The fact you’ve brought Brooks into this, says everything about where your allegiances lie and what was it you said “Stick to the topic”

He was 2013 Clive Churchill medal in a losing side… one might argue that he did his bit and the team let him down…

Oh, and the ref robbed them f*cking all…

…the timing of which now looks very interesting… was Tom aware of the situation with Chez at that time? Did he realise it was looking more and more likely that Chez had one foot out the door because the club could not get to a suitable number? Was that a last-gasp effort by Tom to keep the “premiership window” open?

Bloody honourable if it was…

Honourable yes, stupid definitely.Alright to try and take a pay cut so lesser likes or integral members of the team can stay, but to take a cut for an already highly paid and one that was the highest paid player in the team for 8 years,is ludicrous

Maybe Tom values Chez’s contribution to team success more than some posters?

I know that sounds impossible but…

So you’re taking a shot at my opinion based on absolutely no factual information at all, just your opinion??
I am not taking a shot… you are fully entitled to your opinion and I don’t begrudge anyone not agreeing with me… after all, (with a couple of exceptions) we are all about as informed as each other…

I am saying there is a possibility that Tom thinks that with DCE gone we drop out of contention real quick… perhaps not but the timing of his offer is now very interesting given these developments…

Point me out another representative-level half in the comp that is on less than $1M per year… the $750K Manly offered him (as their BEST shot to try to save face) is embarrassing…

My point was that Tom may have been trying to help bridge the gap in order to keep the team competitive… that has SFA to do with what Chez has been paid for the previous 8 years…

Having re-read my initial response @Nordburg it was a bit narky…

Sorry bud…

A big reason for our non success since 2013 is the way we handled the succession plan for an ageing team from 2015-2018, this is where it got messy.

A big reason why was we were snookered by the salary cap. In 2014, we could not retain Gifty and it created a division in the team. Whatmough signed for the Whinging worms and it was the start of the demise of that great team.

We lost back to back finals in 2014 after finishing 2nd in the league and it was clear that an era was ending. The retention of Foran and DCE was agreed upon and the ripped up by the new management of the club. This caused all hell to break loose, Foran defected to the Whingers, DCE paraded himself around publicly and signed with the Titans and only backflipped after we gave him a desperate offer.

After the 2015 season, Fulton and Barrett cut swathe through our junior ranks, up and coming players like Nico Hynes, Jesse Ramien and Clint Gutherson were either pushed out or let go. 2015 was a very dark year and I remember our Holden cup team made the grand final that year and we squandered the legacy from that team apart from Tom. That team needed to be retained!

The club sacked Toovey, installed Barrett and it was mostly a miserable 3 year tenure where in 2018 we were a whisker away from our first spoon.

The club brought back Hasler, with mixed success and we all know what happened during the later part of season 22 and Des was the fall guy and moved on.

The demise of our first team is all down to bad management in that era, wrong decisions about player recruitment and retention and to this day we have a lop sided salary cap where 4 players get the bulk of the money. There is no balance and I understand now that DCE is going that it will be difficult to sustain the wages the Turbos get.

Mestrov has come in and tried to steady the ship, he has made mistakes, like the Schuster re-signing. That boy did NOT deserve such a lucrative contract! Overall there is some stability, the Blacktown farce is over, all the grades now play out of the same venue. Brookvale is sold out every game now and membership is at record highs. A lot of good work is being done right now.

The DCE farce has disrupted the season, turned our heads and distracted us this week. Its pretty clear to me that neither side of this dispute has come out smelling of roses.

What the club, the members and fans needs is closure!!, there is a succession plan in place, DCE has his wish, now do us all a favour and reveal your intentions as the members and the fans of this club deserve to know!

I know this is about DCE but the fact that all this happened right when The Penns got full control of the club is everything.

I thought it was just because he felt bad that his constant injuries meant he was poor value for the club
Could be… but I find the timing and amount interesting…

Tom’s request was in August and the amount was $750K over 25 and 26…

Club would have been at the pointy end of negotiations with Chez at that time (I imagine, seeing as negotiations called off in December) and we now know that the absolute best offer that Manly could get to was $750K per year (which was probably lower previously - given how negotiations generally play out)…

Tom’s cash could have bumped Chez to the number that it would have likely taken to keep him…

…or Tom may have just woken up one morning and thought “I am getting paid too much to be continually living with injuries and going through rehab”… who knows?
