The Shane Flanagan Influence

Whether we try to retain him for the rest of the year may come down to what we use him for. Is he meant to be in charge of defence? In that case he hasn't finsihed his job!
But on a serious note, would we need a replacement to run defence? Flano's deal apparently had a commitment to stay at least 12 months but neither party may want to enforce that.
Presumably our new efficient front office has been all over this possibility ever since we signed him, so we should already have a shortlist of names who may be interested in joining the Sea Eagles. Someone with Sea Eagles DNA would be ideal.
Flanno coaches the attack and Seibs is defence. Which is interesting because the media keep talking about Flanno being a defence minded coach. We scored 58 points last week so he might be finally getting our attack to click!

Looks like Flanno will see out the 2023 season. Good news if you ask me.

But the bulk of work on the roster will wait until the off-season with Flanagan set to see the season out as right-hand man to Anthony Seibold as the Sea Eagles push for finals. With a 2-2 record since taking over from Griffin, interim coach Ryan Carr will remain in charge before Flanagan takes the reins.

Crawley and NRL great Gorden Tallis said it would be "ideal" for the Dragons if Flanagan took over as soon as possible, to start identifying which players he wants to keep and which he wants to perhaps let go for next season. However, Riccio suggested that Flanagan will likely repay the faith Manly showed him, by remaining the Sea Eagles assistant until the end of the season.

“Talking to Manly officials, all indications are that Shane feels a little indebted to the Sea Eagles for the way they’ve helped him get his coaching career back on track,” Riccio said. “He would be more than comfortable sticking around to see them through to the finals this year.”
I hope Ryan Carr is not lost as a coach, wether it be assistant or head coach at another club. His results since taking over are 2-2. 0 and four would‘ve not been a surprise. But it his enthusiasm in the coaches box which has endeared him to not just Saints fans, but other clubs as well (that would be me from a Manly perspective ). How refreshing to see a coach up and about, clapping, cheering, he even had the whip out against the rabbits (yes I said whip. Get your minds out of the gutter 😛 ).
I’m going to go with Flanno stays until the end of the season. I’m sure there will be plenty of eyes on him in regards to poaching players etc.
Also, I reckon the only reason he rang Hunt was to let him know that if and when he gets the gig, Flanno Jnr may or may not be coming to the Saints, but it won’t be at halfback.
Also Kyle racking up 32 of the 64 points they put on Parras reggies at hooker would have Benny breathing a little better. Could be a reason Dean Young didn’t get the gig. When he took over from the sacked Mary Mc Gregor for the last 6 rounds of 2020, Young played Clunes at half and Hunt at 9 for five of those games. Apparently Hunt has not spoken to Young since.

if couldn’t have happened if we wanted to keep them! We obviously didn’t want to keep them, or they wouldn’t have been released!

I think you should be asking why did we release them.!!

Just sayin’
If a player, or player agent agitates for a release, it's in a club's interests to allow that to happen for various reasons mate.

Last thing you want is an unhappy playing group staying together.

Depends the scenario and the player IMO.

I agree if the player is going to kick stones and become toxic then cut your lossses but there are plenty of examples of releases being requested and clubs holding firm.

One that springs to mind is Addo Carr wanting to leave a year early and the Storm making him see out the extra year.

100% agree mate. We all knew it was a stepping stone for him to get the big seat somewhere else and good luck to him.
But I still think we should cut him loose now.
You're probably right mate, in most instances it's common practice for a person, particularly one with intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the business to be terminated immediately upon giving notice

There are many coaches who specialise in different areas of every team.
Head coach
Assistant coach
Attacking coach
Defensive coach
Physio / Fitness
And more
Seibold and Flanagan may have more influence in either attack or defence, but both cover All areas.
It's likely many of the attacking movements, especially backline, would have Brett Stewart "highly involved"
Personally would like Glen Stewart join the coaching staff next season, a no nonsense old school footy player with modern skills.
Would be highly respected and has the Manly DNA.

Then I think you need to ask why is it an unhappy playing group?

It’s the coaches job to keep them happy! If they are not happy sack the coach!

If the player wants to leave for more money then stuff them they can sit out the year like Gordon Tallis did!

Contracts are contracts!

An NRL contract that pays the player below market value is completely worthless these days. All Managers and most players know exactly how to get out of a contract. There is a reason why no player has been forced to sit out a year since Tallis was 27 years ago.

If you’re a Manly fan that believes everything that’s written by those in the media,it could be a very bumpy few months, for those that can decipher the wheat from the chaff,it won’t be a problem. They’ll just link anyone that can start negotiating officially on November 1 this year

Totally agree.

It'll be bad enough that the more main stream sites will link good Manly players off contract as targets, and highlight any tenuous link (remember when it was the Trbojevics to the Dragons because their Dad knew someone over there?), yet it'll be even worse when sites such as 'the sporting life' and 'zero tackle' spew forth their rubbish onto their mothers' keyboards.

And people seem to think that Manly sit around with no money and look at players being approached all the time. There is a retention and recruitment committee.

I understand the world of forums but a lot of hearsay gets touted as gospel and the anger/annoyance at these rumours is palpable. And when it's invariably not true, there's little reflection as we're off to shake our fists at the next clouds these gits publish.

Bit y'all do y'all y'hear!

ye-hah!

If it's on nrl.com...it must be official!

Shane Flanagan has been announced as the new head coach of St George Illawarra with the premiership-winning coach to take over at the Dragons from the start of the 2024 NRL season.

The Dragons announced on Wednesday that Flanagan had signed a three-year deal to take over as coach of the club from the start of next season.
