HE has been one of the finds of the season, but rookie Sea Eagles centre Brian Kelly has been as surprised as anyone about his rapid rise in the NRL.
The 20-year-old has already made a big impact scoring four tries in his five first grade games after moving from the Gold Coast.
“I was just happy to get down here and do a full pre-season with Manly and hopefully get a debut through the year,” Kelly said.
““I still pinch myself when I go home … I lay down and look back on the day and ask ‘did I just do that’. It is all still pretty much a dream at the moment.”
He reinforced his skills in Friday night’s game against the Roosters when he sent fellow centre Dylan Walker over for the sensational match winning try.
“It sort of just happened real quick and it was pretty funny how I linked up with ‘Walks’,” Kelly said
“He is usually on the other side of the field so it was a pretty good play.
“We do a lot of training with ball skills so it sort of just happened.”
Despite the attention he is starting to receive, Kelly remains as humble as he was when he arrived at Manly with no guarantees about how things would pan out.
“I’ve still got to work on a lot of things, I’m still working a lot on my defence that is probably the main thing. Attack will come after that I guess,” he said.
‘I’m slowly warming up to it I reckon.
“I’m just stoked and over the moon for the opportunity I have now.”
Just as excited about Kelly’s situation are his parents Brian and Dorothy who are back home in Ballina.
“They are overwhelmed and super proud,” he said.
They take it in turns to come down to Sydney to watch every home game at Lottoland.
