The referees made a crucial error that cost Manly the game

First Grader
There is a referee right in line with the dead ball line looking at the catch and he still missed it

He should be sacked never to ref first grade ever again

Cheating NRL

It may have happened in the opening minute, but this crucial error eventually cost Manly the game.

The referees pinned Dylan Walker for an out-on-the-full kick-off in the opening play, marching Melbourne down the field who then converted the opportunity into a try.
The Storm's onslaught began from there, racking up four unanswered tries and taking all the momentum with them.

A photo taken by observant Titans back-rower Chris McQueen shows that Ryley Jacks' foot was actually up in the air when he took the ball, meaning a drop-out should have been awarded instead of a penalty, possibly prevented Manly's poor start.

McQueen, along with Sharks recruit James Segeyaro who retweeted the picture, was fuming about the calls impact on the game.

Should have been a drop out, not a penalty, then Melbourne score. Little moments change the game so much.

There's only inches in it but McQueen has a good point.

That's 2 weeks in a row where we have been dudded by the referees in the first minute of the game and the opposing teams have scored tries from it. Both teams the two top teams too. Both times the momentum has changed. What does Manly have to do to get fair calls from refs? McQueen is right when he said it changes momentum and if opposing players can see it why can't officials see it too. What can Manly do to get a fairer deal with the refs?

Changes momentum.
You go from being on the attack to being on the back foot.
As McQueen says.
If you think momentum doesn't matter watch saints v cowboys tale of two halves.
Two different games in one.
And we don't have the confidence to overcome such setbacks.

Simple way to solve that problem is not to kick it that bloody close to the dead ball line to start with. Jacks could have let that ball go and it would have went dead, so why even put yourself in a position where you are relying on the ref to make a decision to start with. Not once, but twice yesterday - it's just dumb.

Hey Silvertails is not the place for well thought out, logical thinking

Said this exact same thing yesterday too.

Also, a good team overcomes a dud call.
It's called resilience. And it comes from attitude and desire.

Agreed on all threads didn't cost us the game but does make you think the referees get caught up in those ' professional' clubs never make basic errors and assume all is fine. Good pick up mr McQueen. Maybe a bit more due dilegence before blowing the whistle in coming weeks and check with the bunker if old mate right line has the testicular fortitude to say ' mate, just confirm that for me.' Agree also on don't kick so deep. Im sure Bellamy would be saying to his player.' Got lucky, dont do it again you'll cost us next time. There watching now !! '

Tennis and cricket recognized a fair while ago that umpires are human and prone to errors and to me that is the crux of the matter. They regularly over rule these errors with the help of technology. They could easily poke their head in the sand and say that the player on the end of the crap decision should have been good enough to get over it which is what some are saying we should do. Not an acceptable situation it's clear

I bet the next time this happens it will be checked , trust us to be the ones who broke virgin ground!

But can they check it? I thought this year the bunker could only be used to rule on trys and nothing else. So it should have been up to the ground officials to rule on.

If the technology's there then the officials should use it for contentious calls. They've got better technology this year and calls have been sped up so it would not waste as much time as what had happened in the past.

all this would have done was change the entire outcome of every play as we saw it. Starting from a drop out and not a penalty at half way.

How would the remaining 79 minutes play out? Well manly might have won, might have won by 14. Storm might have won, by 4 points like they did or by 50!

Who knows?

Same as other complaints about a decision. In this case, it doesn't mean we can take 6 points of the Storm for their 1st try and we win 26-24. The entire game turns out different.

Perhaps we should be looking at poor performances from individuals and at a team level, rather than always look for 2 or 3 refs decisions. But...that doesn't sell papers...

Would Cam Smith make the same comments as McQueen ?

Would the Manly of yesteryear simply fired up and used a referee error as a basis to get even with the opposition that benfitted?

Good players get on with it, and use the energy for positive.
McQueen, well....his comments say it all for me. Good luck Tigers.

Put simply, McQueen is not a player I want wearing a Manly jersey, with an attitude like that.

Why don't we worry about the 30 errors/missed tackles...oh no! It was this refs error in the first minute that changed momentum/cost us the game. Really? Well there were 30 other occasions that swung momentum and cost us the game, some that let in tries, and then there are the added bad player decisions (didn't pass, went the wrong way from dummy half etc).

But no, that refs changed the game and made it hard for manly to win...
