The " out of touch" NRL

I took to Twitter last night ( I usually don't engage quite so heavily) and quite a few commented about my typical one eyed Manly views clouding everything, so perhaps it is just me!

Those 'quite a few' don't see the irony of simply sprouting 'manly sux manly sux manly sux' for you to have a decent conversation with.

On one hand they blame your Manly bias then on the other their own anti-Manly bias prevents them from having a decent conversation about the nrl.

But it's to be expected from the brain dead that need rags like the DT to tell them what to think.

@Mark from Brisbane you may not be as alone as you think. The recent revolt by the clubs over the grant allication and the forcing of the resignation of Grant showed me that there is a deep and abiding loss of faith by the clubs in the NRL.

Rumours of threats (at that time) to form a break away comp were muted, but I suspect every club has and would consider it.

And, unlike Super League, I would support it.

PSS You left out the NRL's outrageous financial management.
A Steve Mascord piece in today's Herald about Superleague staging a club game at WIN Stadium early next year and the potentialities that could flow from that.

Interesting read.

Someone close to me used to buy corporate boxes at another NRL clubs home ground for the year, every year until 2013. They have lost all interest due to the points in your post Mark and they are not Manly supporters. My family and I have not spent one cent on anything NRL in the same period for the same reasons. There are so many people who have walked away from the game in the last few years, not just Manly fans. I did watch some bush footy live. What a refreshing change to see the game played without bias or over refereeing. Both teams given the same leniency and neither team tried to take advantage of the rules. It was a way better product and reminded me of what made rugby league appealing.

Top 3 hates
1. Greenturd
2.Tony Archer and his band of merry men
3. The blue shirt bottle carrier barking instructions to players in attack, get them off.

Daikin Air Conditioning gone to Rugby, once Manly sponsors.

I think a lot of the current woes stem directly to the effective ownership of the game by TV.

Of course they don't really own it but remember that Gyngel character a few years ago saying when asked about scheduling " it's my game now and I'll do what I want with it".

So it's ratings and advertising.

We want the highest rating teams at the peak times on the peak nights, tick!

We want to dominate the Brisbane market and maximise ratings and advertising by playing the Broncos every Friday , tick!

We want to pick the Grand Finalists to maximise ratings and advertising, the refs can ensure that happens, tick.

We want to ensure that our refs are safe from criticism, so how can we do that, firstly they don't front post match media conferences AND any football club person who is publicly critical gets fined $10k, tick!

Yep,it's all to do with money and absolutely nothing to do with fans!

It's not you Mark, it's them ! Last year's draw was an absolute farce. Monday nights, 5 day turnarounds, meant last year's season was over before it started. This year, have been able to get the young battler to a few games, and surprise, surprise our performance has improved, due to a draw that is at least bordering on fair. Keep your scepticism up champ, it is well justified and will keep you healthy in the long run.

Im pretty sure every recent ceo we have bitched about. Every ref boss we have bitched about. I suspect that will always be the case.

I can't see the draw being changed too much because the Nrl will try and appease the media companies so they get the next new biggest tv deal.

If you can watch a game and pretty much know when a penalty is about to be given.

It is all coming from the top down with the refereeing, because some wank wants a faster game.

Everything is just so inconsistent because of the apparent penalty quota.

A new CEO and two years of pain to get rid of all the stupid things that teams are allowed to get away with without being penalized is what the league needs.

Hopefully a CEO who can backup what he says. Not one who continually talks tough but then comes up with decisions that are as weak as piss.

Maybe then it will be back to the game it once was.

We are definitely not the only ones that feel there are major problems with the NRL.

Just been having a google search and wow, I have come across hundreds of recent threads on various supporter forums agreeing with much of what you have posted Mark.

And I came across an actual topic and combination of words that came up for at least five different forums, those words being ..... NRL is rigged.....!

Other areas that were popular topics of contention were: The draw favouring certain clubs over others, officiating/penalty inconsistencies, TPA rorting, government and NRL funding discrimination, media manipulation, judiciary bias, etc etc.

Some real comments from fans of opposition clubs....

"......Rugby League is rigged, and winners are decided well before the game..."

"......the NRL is corrupt, that the top 8 is decided before the season (not in any order) and the referees make sure it happens....."

"....the NRL totally corrupt and have rigged the season..."

And it goes on and on...there are literally thousands and thousands of threads, comments, blogs, articles relating to fan unrest in some way.

Funny thing, I even found a link to an article from 2016 where the Broncos benefited quite substantially in terms of dollars from their favourable draw this year. And the kickers is that Greenburg does not deny the bias towards them.
It is there from the horses mouth that the competition is clearly not an even playing field...
https://sports.yahoo.com/news/nrl-dont-deny-brisbane-bias-102632026.html

NRL fan numbers are dropping in droves despite the NRL purposely inflated membership fan base figures. And it is becoming increasingly obvious by many that the NRL is just a manipulated product used to make money to benefit a few. The true fans, and even many players are being used and abused in the process.

It is certainly not the game it was twenty years ago or even 10 years ago for that matter.

So no it is not 'just us' that see what is going on with the NRL it is in fact 'many'.

It's a you stated and more.. if someone like Cullen got smashed by soliola would it of received so much attention? hell no.. The nrl has certain teams and players they treat better then others for there own interests. everyone can see they want the panthers and eels in the finals. The west is booming and they want in on it. The shiit eels have won 5 in a row. 5.. how? play storm with no stars. refs hand them the dogs game in extra time with a farcical penalty when there player lost the ball. tigers by pure luck lolohea misses from in front. Against the donkeys they are given a leg up with penalties out of there own half forward passes are unchecked and they were offside all night along with Edwards the dog who should have been sent to the bin. then there's the holding down in the tackles they get away with everything. then there's the panthers they rorted us with 14 -4 and a complete garbage try that everyone knows wasn't and now look archer has come out and stated TWO tries against the titans were incorrect.. yet the panthers sit equal with saints now on 24 points. I say it every week the nrl is a complete and utter joke. since the 2013 gf. oh and the cheating storm get to celebrate there 07 "victory" on Sunday. wtf is up with that

correct me if I'm mistaken but wasn't the NRL Commission supposed to be the white knight that would save the game and give power back to the people? be fairer for all and end the pay dispute thats always been just under the surface? be transparent and not favour some teams? be IMPARTIAL yeah right......

well guess what. it has done diddly squat and the game looks to be in a big a mess as it always has been.

Mark, you are not alone on this.
I listen to both daily sports shows on the radio ( BSB on 2KY & Talkin' Sport on 2SM ) and the overriding discussions, phone calls etc is pretty much what you've stated.
-We all want the rules enforced consistently - there is too much of what they call "game management" rather than "refereeing".
- The standing jokes of Friday night Bronco night or playing the same team twice in six weeks is high on the agenda too.

I know alot on here don't like Talkin' Sport but they've really been on the money as to what is making us disillusioned with the game.

One example they brought up during the week was the Lussick sinbinning for punching, Peter Tunks took the refs and bunker to task saying that they were too busy looking at the Lussick punch ( which was plain to see ) but neglected what caused him to throw the punch - DeBelin throwing the forearm at Darcy's head - and also that Widdop threw a punch too and they both escaped sanction.

Also, refs are missing simple basic stuff like Burgess's play the ball the other week when he was facing the sideline ffs, like how can that be acceptable?

They're just neglecting some basic rules like playing the ball correctly and too busy looking for the 50/50's like hands on the ball in the ruck etc

I remember in the Manly v Broncs game, there was a turnover about 10m out from the Broncs goal line and I could distinctly hear the ref say "use your foot" to whoever was playing the ball....and guess what?. Said player didn't use his foot and nothing was done so why the f$%k say it in the first place?

Another thing that irks me is when a ball carrier is held up, momentum stopped but still on his feet, the ref calls held and then a third player comes in and they knock him over...what's the point of calling held then.

Even stuff like Croker's conversion attempt at Brookie where he moved it in about 5m, how the hell can all these officials not notice that?

Last night the Bulldogs ( Frawley I think) fumbled the ball inside the Panthers 20m zone and it went noticeably backwards yet the refs straight up called it a knockon, Panthers scrum feed, off the hook and away they went. The Fox commentators couldn't believe it.

I know it's all little stuff but it's basic stuff, they're too busy trying to tweak things rather than just get the basics right and that is what is annoying us.

I could go on....
mate I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post. your right and the examples you give are as you say litte things but that's what makes the difference and sometimes there so blatant that cheating is the only reasonable conclusion. look at our game with the panthers and the dwz try.. ffs everyone knows it's not a try and they give it. cost us the game and did we get an apology? it makes me so mad how far the game we all love has fallen. The lussick incident fmd I was screaming 'you better send widdop' and they didn't even mention it that scumbag gaz sees everything yet didn't say a word none of them did. He just came in with an uppercut and nothing.

The game isn't fair anymore since the 2013 gf rort the game has never been the same. they did it on the biggest stage and no one said a word.. The police need to investigate the nrl.
Toovey was right all along and they laughed at him..
