The optimistic post game summary

Ok,that’s a reason for last night’s defence, what about the rest of the season?
It has been better the last 6 or more games, the Rorters game the middle forwards were dominated by the intensity, 6TH best in the competition is an improvement from last season, it’s not near the top three teams, but it’s improving.

Yeah, all talk of deserved or not, ill discipline yada yada...if we have zero sin bins we win by plenty IMO.

Frustrating game, half the team were as equally as terrible as Gough.

Hopefully the wake up call we need.

Do we all remember 2008 Round 23 when 14th placed Souths put 40 on us.

I quote this all the time.

I knew in 2008 we wouldn't win another game from that point on.

They have looked better and the margin for loses has definitely decreased, but the defence has not improved

By what metric? Most teams are conceding high scores this year. We're currently ranked 6th of 17 teams for points conceded (1st being least and 17th being most), having played one more game than most.

This how we've tracked for that in the last few years:

2017 - 11/16
2018 - 16/16
2019 - 5/16
2020 - 14/16
2021 - 6/16
2022 - 11/16
2023 - 9/17
2024 - 6/17*

Yeah they will be fired up. I can see us winning the last 2 games.
We should have been fired up against the Wooden spooners for a top 4 spot
What more greater motivation did we need to win the game last night ?
We had the full complimentary team to win
On all Betting odds Our superior team on paper were out right favourites to win against the wooden spooners . All the experts tipped a Manly win for good reason
But the Reason we lost was ...
We simply lost our way as we have during the season with our inconsistent play

But this thread is all about Optimism ...
We have the players
We have been capable of winning against the top sides
We have 2 more games to redeem our selves and regain the respect as a serious Sea eagles finals fighting team
We can do this
We have to this
And do this
All for the Glory of our Legendary Manly Sea eagles club

You’re right, teams on average are conceding more points, but Manly not improving in known weaknesses. They still struggle to hold on after adversity, whether that be in a set after a penalty/6 again or following an error with the ball. They are still being targeted down the right edge, with great success.DCE/Olakalatu/Garrick or whoever is at right centre.
I’ll give them one area of improvement, the wingers don’t seem to be flying in as much or they don’t seem to be left short. Not sure if that’s a personnel improvement or an area they’ve made an effort to fix

Disagree on your statement about holding on after adversity - look at the last game against Saints, plus we’ve mounted several comebacks to win OR put our foot on the opposition’s throat in the second half after they’ve started a comeback in the first half.

Last night was an abomination very much assisted by the ref.

So given all the revealing numbers and bleakness in this forum I’d like to ask 3 simple questions:

(1) How far are we going in the finals?

Once we answer that:

(2) Is this good enough? (keep in mind how much we have paid for this squad and how long they are locked in for).

(3) how do you you feel?

I think it all comes down to what your expectations are / for the season

I have always had is a bottom of the 8 team due to games like this

You mistake my comment, we didnt need to lose the game.

But we need to understand that we are not sure things and that we need to compete for everything and be disciplined to succeed.
Dont worry. You cant reason with a seasoned whinger...............there are certainly a lot of them that contribute to this forum.

Penrith should’ve lost to Parramatta a couple of weeks ago and they were close to full strength, only Edwards of note was out. They leaked 34 points to the team running second last and only won with a flurry of 3 tries in 5 minutes right at the death.

All of that with just the one sin bin.

If Turbo finds Saab right at the end of the Tigers game we win in a similar fashion.

Is anyone deathriding the Panthers in the same way?

No. Because it’s one game.

Everything went against us. We didn’t play well. Who cares, I’ve seen massive improvement this year and expect us to perform much better in the final two games.

Seibold said an interesting thing in his pre-game interview - that we are a top 4 team in attack but are 6th defensively.

I’m assuming that is based on our for & against, so if true, we’re not so bad defensively after all.

I think that was our biggest loss margin this season?
It may be true that it was our biggest loss this season, and that's the point. At this time of year, our defence should be sorted out weeks out from the semi's. Playing against last place was the opportunity to focus more on defence than attack.

1. Out after week 1
2. Another failure season
3. As pessimistic as ever since 2013

It would be good if there was a measurable statistic for this, dating back to 2020, ranking each team per year for most points conceded in the set after a penalty or 6-again... to see if we are conceding more or less relative to other teams year-on-year.

I doubt this is an issue only for Manly, it's just that we don't pay attention to how other teams concede points.

I know the game is not played on paper but that, along with our improved PA ranking since last year, would suggest to me that we are improving.

Some might call that interpretation optimistic, but no one is saying we are perfect and no one is saying we will win the competition this year either.

I think this game is just a write off. It was a quicksand type of game where every small thing that went our way was compounded. On reflection I don't believe we should put too much angst into it. Let's have a look shall we....30 minutes out of 80 with a man down, raped by the referee for debatable infringements, I saw a high tackle penalty go against the tigers then a few minutes later we get a sin bin for a high tackle penalty. We all know we have defensive lapses. If we fix that up we will be a force. We had a lot of chances at the backend of the game. On another day we win. That to me says we have the potential and we at least battle to the end. In conclusion I'd just like to say that the referee can get f÷×ked and I like dancing on the ceiling.
you like harper?
