The old warhorse

Have not seen him break a tackle in five years or assist in a try
Jake is nowhere near the attacking value as Cam Murray and others as he lacks the speed to be a threat, but his involvement even in backline sweeps and decoy/option runs is often overlooked and he still does have a nice tip on pass and inside ball and the hard part to value is his impact to his team mates both on and off the field and gotta add, has scored a few and been involved in a heap even in recent years

Jake will be more effective with a stronger pack supporting him. We went nearly all of last season with one starting prop unavailable (Lodge) which put extra pressure on all the other middles.
I seem to recall it said that for this year Manly were focussing on being physically stronger ... hey when's the next Manly Way episode when we need it?!

Personally feel Jake is on VERY big money compared with to other "quality " lock forwards , but will say 1 thing.
There are certain players that as a team mate, you look for on the field who you know will have your back 100%, not because they are great players, simply all heart....Jake fits this category everyday and to have a bloke like that for training, leadership and a pillar to build a team around (especially youngsters) is priceless.
I spent a fair bit of time with him and that nice guy vibe, high energy buzz ....it's all real
No one denies that JT is a very decent man and also a passionate manly man. The issue is the $ the club had allocated to him vs the return. We can’t be adding a 15% local junior loading to these guys. If he was a parra junior and not as affable we’d be screaming the house down at the value. Smart clubs don’t do this.

Jake was part of the package deal for Tom. I thought at the time, a long term deal for Tommy, great, no worries, Jake, maybe not so long. Just got to be a bit more circumspect when it comes to long term player deals in the future.

Jake would probably be in the very low category for missed tackles as well and something which can not be understated and still one of the best and effective techniques going .
Very durable over time now too and certainly hope that that can continue

Games moved past these types of players. You can only have 1 (or 2 max) pylons (that have other attributes like leadership / tackling). Tevaga, Taukeiaho, Trbojevic, Sipley, Brown, Woods, Lodge, James, Condon - we need to change things up !! Only two of all those mentioned (that are still playing) should be selected tops.

I think you are painting with a pretty broad brush to suggest that Tevaga and Jake are the same kind of player.

The unfortunate thing for Jake is that the older he gets, the more of a plodder he becomes. And I hate saying that because its Jake, but sadly its the truth.

As a front rower he doesn't make enough metres and his post contact metres stat line compared to other forwards doesn't make for good reading. Sometimes even just bending the line is not one of Jake's strong points. There are skinny as outside backs who get more post contact metres. And as a lock he's not really quick enough on his feet and can slow down the attack playing first or second receiver.

As said, I hate to say this because its Jake, but I really can see why Madge, while having him as NSW captain, only played him for about 20 minutes or so each game. He's not overly mobile and has no speed. Yes he has good ball skills and we know all about his tackling, but that too has been negated because of the 6 again rule all but eliminating dominant tackles. Essentially we're paying over $1m per season for a plodding link man with the ball who the refs target every time he makes a tackle. "Get off him Jake" or "Jake get off" has virtually become part of the TV commentary for Manly games.

I would honestly love for Jake Trbojevic to come out this year and have a career year. I think we'd all love to see that. And personally, I hope he proves me wrong. But I'm not so sure he will 🤷‍♂️

Have heard this type of thing many times over the years, will go back to the old winger example

Early 2010s all the talk was that all wingers had to be 6’4+ and be able to jump, the days of the small wingers were over. Since then To’o has been arguably the best winger or all time and doesn’t fit any of that mould, and they had Turuva on the other wing as well

Agree with what you’re saying but I think it’s harsh to label a Brown as a plodder. Sure Brown has some deficiencies in his game but he generally plays at a frantic pace. Yes Brown gets belted in some tackles but makes a lot of ground before the collision with the pace he runs at.
