PS The Silvertail code of not abusing fellow members does not apply to ruminants.

PSS You may wish to consider that @HappilyManly quotes 'stotle on her posts .. and she could beat the crap out of you.

So we've gone from solid hand shakes, to pats on the back, to half-pie hand shakes with a man brace, to kissing team mates on the cheek now! (once last week, two this weekend.... so far!). Along with that, blokes are putting good shots on each other in defence....only to bend over and help the bloke off the ground and see if he's OK!.....its Man love gone way too far. Where will it end?.....whats next, a full-on pash at half-time, BJ's on the sideline?! We've got state of origin coaches piissing in each others pocket a day after the game. Where's the hatred gone in the game, it's f@cken rainbows and bloody unicorns now.
Bring back the hate!

What is he doing there ? He needs to be on the paddock. Sack Barrett !

What happened to the good old tonguey. Give em a good tonguey I say. A peck on the cheek or forehead just doesnt satisfy.

If the internet was around way back when they changed from the unlimited tackle rule I am sure there would have been similar threads about the changing game

I was around at the time, and everybody was keen to see a more attacking less boring plodfest.

When they changed the value of a field goal from 2pts to 1pt, everybody was happy to see teams go for more tries.

When they changed the value of a try from 3pts to 4 pts .. ditto.

When they eventually got rid of "contested" scrums the game improved out of sight.

But all those changes came in over a period of decades and were well thought out and promoted in advance. Today a newspaper article bags something and the NRL knee jerks and introduces a new rule the following day without any consideration of lege ignorata consequentias.

What the hell has happened to the game we love?
  • Props standing out at 5/8 during scrums
  • Punching and even slapping will cost 10 in the bin
  • Fullbacks packing into scrums at lock
  • Shoulder charges will get you suspended, unless you have an upcoming rep game apparently
  • Pushing in scrums seems to be frowned upon
  • Fullbacks being picked as centres in rep games ahead of specialist centres
  • Players rarely actually playing the ball with their foot. Thank God for Jorge
  • Square up penalty counts
  • World Championship Wrestling (thanks Melbourne......)
  • Hooker's who've never had to strike for a ball in their entire career
  • Scrum feeds behind the lock's feet
And that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more.
It truly is shocking, let's bring back the biff to begin with. If the storm actually got punished for wrestling then that'd be solved as well.

I've noticed that smooth yet sharp plays have also disappeared a little when watching match highlights from pre 2013 compared to recent seasons (I think dogs to blame as they brought big bodies in who play slow and boring). The most dissapointing thing is that the NRL does nothing to fix anything but things that don't require fixing eg biff.

Fair call but it was more of a comment on change - also back then I am guessing you were a fair bit younger and more open to change

I am not saying it is right or wrong but they are going to keep changing all sports over time

The NRL seem to go by the motto.....if it ain't broke, fix it. If it is broke, leave it alone.

It is not change that concerns me, it is the current rapid nature of it combined with the notion that the marketing dept seem to be making the calls based on 2 criteria ... what will mums think of it and will it make the game faster.

The best recent rule change was the removal of the corner post from being in touch ... and that was sensibly discussed for several years before introduction.

We've had plenty of change, most of it retrograde imo, some clarity would be welcome.

The changes that were made back then were made with the game in mind. For the good of IT.
They were made by people from the game who knew the game who knew what fans wanted to see.
Now decisions are made by people to please corporates or to please broadcasters.
The latter can be understood to a degree but the difference now is these people don't know the game therefore don't know us, but continue to feed what they think we need.

I agree wholeheartedly regarding your first two points, but disagree with the notion that contested scrums necessarily contributed to plodding football. Take a look at the 1988 Grand Final and you'll see football at its finest. Fast, tough and a variety of skills on display - not just constant kicking into the in-goal area. Scrums were tense, skilful contests where games could be won or lost. A hooker could win or lose you a game. The differential penalty eliminated the major problem with contested scrums. The game certainly sped up after Super League when the game became incredibly fast, but at the cost of it becoming way too predictable for my liking. In my view, the contested scrum gave the game greater variety and an "x factor" coaches could not so easily put into their calculations.

Also rule changes were submitted to the Referees Association for ratification .. a process was followed that took time and allowed comment and opposing views to be expressed.

Now Greenslime has a brainfart and the ref's are told the new rule the night before a game.
