The key is Brett Stewart

Sure, he may have a contact. but he needs to meet the rquirements and obligations of that contract. Since it is a playing contract, if he can't play then we shouldn't pay.

IMO Trent Barrett payed him all due respect last year and Snakes poor performances added to the teams poor performances. I would hope that this season will be different on both counts.

Snake is one of my all time favourites, but if he can't play then he should take a reduced payout and move on.

Was typing something similar then saw your response - on the money with that reply

I was thinking of a thread title change, with apologies to Ken Follett plus the late Daphne du Maurier and Alastair Maclean:

'Fear is the Key to Rebecca, is Brett Stewart'.

Thoughts?

Part of the risk assessment with any contract in the NRL would be injuries to players. Players take the risk of injury every time they take the field. It would hardly be fair if it were only the player taking that risk. But hey, if we can organise contracts so that players don't receive income when injured then I'm all for it.

A payout of some kind would probably be best for all parties. But on what I've seen from snake over the last 2 years I hardly think he will lay down here. I expect he will squeeze us for every cent that he legally can.

I may be wrong but I thought if Snake is deemed unfit to play, he can be paid out and it not be included in the cap. But getting that money paid out through insurance would be the tricky part so the money would most likely have to come straight out of the clubs pocket.

My understanding is that the NRL medical director (based on specialist advice) can medically retire a player so that they may recieve a payout from the club but that money is not a part of the cap. This is what happened with Choc Dropmough. The insurance is a totally seperate conversation. The next question we need to ask, can Manly afford to pay him out?? Surely the answer must be yes. With Snake and Matai's history of injuries, I am sure the NRL MD (who used to be on the Manly staff, I think) could say that Snake is not fit to play anymore. Snake would have to agree. He probably wants to play this year with Manly and then get a 2 year swan song in Europe. Meaning, if he medically retires, the Europe dream is over. IMO if he signed a contract, he deserves every penny of the contract. The club should financially honor this agreement.

This thread is just way too negative. And makes too many negative assumptions.
Brett Stewart ~ The Prince of Brookvale ~ is a Manly champion with a champion's pride. He will not go out with a whimper, not in his DNA.

Oh I lament the fickle and disloyal posts all over this site. :finger: He will play fullback for MWSE 2017 and will have a great final year scoring tries and making almost as many try assists as usual. Sure he is our most experienced player and wont have the speed of a 24 yr old. But his defence and stability at the back will help us to win whatever games we do.

In short, all you doubters, TAKE A GOOD LONG HARD LOOK AT YOURSELVES.
Snake will surprise and you will all be made to EAT YOuR WORDS. Some of you, the more extreme ppl, i wont single you out, will likely choke on them. :wait:

Let's hope I am proven wrong but snake will only be here for his last pay check . His form since his brother quite rightly was shown the door has been ****e . He looked dis interested last year and now take away his speed and what is left ? It's 5 long years since 2011 but I will wait and see which Brett turns up come march

This is simply not true. Do not let your argument cloud the truth. Snake has his best year in 2015 since the glory days of 2011. He scored 16 tries and many experts were calling him the form fullback of the competition. That was the year Glenn was at Souths.

Last season Snake never got going because of injury not because of some lame conspiracy theory about sulking etc. you could see that he simply couldn't run like he used to...the knees are shot and whilst I do think it's time he hung up the boots, I think it's unfair to say that he simply didn't turn up after everything he has done in a Manly jumper. The guy is diabetic, 31 years old and on bad knees...he is a competitor but sadly Father Time is catching up with him.
