The Jake Conundrum

If Jake retires without a premiership manly has failed him.
Sad as it may be, this is far more likely than not. Same goes for Tom. I can't see us winning a premiership within the next few years, and once Cherry goes we're going to be in a state of flux for a time. That "premiership window" we were supposed to be in is closing rapidly, and time is catching up with all of our "marquee" players bar the Big O. We've had some truly great players since our last premiership, but we've never built the forward pack we need to compete.

After the “ decade of dominance “ it’s been a decade of disappointment.

I fear you are spot on , they’ll retire never knowing the joy of a Premiership ring.

Whilst I agree with Jake to prop I also dont see a stand out lock option.

I'm going to say something that might get me in a lot of trouble here... but if we are judging him strictly by his ability to hit the ball up as a prop, then I don't think he's much better than the recently departed Aaron Woods for example.

What he does do however is always find his front for a fairly quick play-the-ball... the cost of that though is there's not much risk of him busting through the line or making many post-contact metres.

So, in my opinion he's neither here nor there as a lock or prop. He needs some reinvention, otherwise we'll know what we'll get, which is serviceable... but I'm not sure how much further that's going to drive this team forward.

I suspect the coach knows this but is stuck because his $950k/year contract runs until the end of 2026... That, and moving him along as a local junior, Origin Captain and Kangaroo, would be akin to vomiting on the Pope...

One thing Seibs has got wrong at Man IMO. Is how the 13 plays. Look you got to work with your cattle. Jake's a rep player. Has a leadership role. Seibs has learnt from his donkey days not to start out kicking heads in as soon as he gets to a club.

But this off season is well and truely time.

No one pleases everyone feathered friend
What ever we say will be right for some and wrong for others
And At the end of the day we need to say what we have to say

Sing with me Scorpy
All together now feathered friend ....

But it's all right now
I learned my lesson well
You see, you can't please everyone
So you got to please yourself

Our team and squad is still better with Jake in it, he does a heap of selfless off the ball work that doesnt show up on stats that helps the team, things like push support plays to engage defenders and open space, moving us to points of the field and getting a quick play the ball so we can get in position for set plays and yes, even conceding tactical 6 agains when our defensive pine is scrambling so we can reset.

He does what the cosch wants and team needs to his own detriment, always team first.

That said, as @Rocky said, we need a bit of a reinvention in 2025.

I'm not as pushed on postion as most as as his role aint going to change too much but what I would like to see is a reduction in minutes and a game plain and training program designed to increase his impact.

50-55min should be about the sweet spot for mine, go harder when out there.

But....and this is the big caveat. The team need to demonstrate that we can cope without him on the field for this to happen.

And for those writing him off, recency bias IMO. He is 30 not 34, he can turn things around, there are plenty of players who have have turned around form in later years....we dont have to look far to our man Nathan Brown as an example.

Agree with all of this.

I do laugh at the sh!t Jake cops on here. He is still our second best forward behind Haumole.

The reality is that if he hit the open market, he would get around 600-700k for 3 years, similar to what Finucane got from the Sharks. I would hope Jake has a lot more juice than Finucane had when he got that contract as well.

As a lapsed Presbyterian, I would be happy to ‘yodel on His Oldliness’ and thus take one for the team.

Preferably however, not in the presence of the Swiss Guards.

I can’t see him improving as a footballer. You know what you’re gonna get with Jake and it’s all heart and a true toiler. Unfortunately it’s just not worth 950 k.
That may be true and we can lament the contract till the cows come home but hindsight is 2020 the the resignings of him and Turbo was almost universally applauded at the time.

He has his contract and it is what it is.

Does show that these long term deals to cone with risk and we have a good few on long ones now.

Everything we take Constructively is advantageous to us Including Criticism
Criticism may hurt our ego but it Keeps us on the Go and we should be thankful for the ones that take the time to tell us how it is
Copping Criticism on the chin is a good thing for all of us that want to keep stiving for excellence
Criticism also eliminates any form of Complacency
No one is perfect and we all have room for improvement

So we should Cop Criticism like a Men possessed and Rise to our best like Premiership Winning Great Eagles
