The Cleary Ciraldo Style

It seems we've hit a bit of a necessary evil in the evolution of coaching but gosh I hope it doesn't last and we evolve into something entertaining again.

Whether it was Ciraldo inspiring Cleary of just Cleary himself, this method of building automatons who just run and run and tackle and tackle until the sheer volume of work completely decimates the opposition into submission, is the most boring football imaginable.

This is not sour grapes because I really wouldn't be at all excited about watching Manly team like this, though I suspect Seibold was trying to match their play style - pretty dumb because it requires ridiculous fitness and drills from dawn to dusk which we neither have nor have done.

Hopefully someone comes up with a counter style soon or the fans may begin to look for something more exciting.

The Penrith style is very reminiscent of the Warren Ryan style of the 1980's, which gave us the most boring GF ever in 1986, which Paramatta won 4-2, which was the year after a 7-6-win Canterbury over St George, which was no better.

Spot on. Coaching and professionalism is taking the game to its logical conclusion. Robotic players drilled to play the same way every play, every game. In defense, high aerobic forwards who can trot across and up and down the field all day, getting 3 into the “tackle” as often as possible, then peeling away in a precise sequence to gain maximum time to reset and go again. Isiah Yeo being the prototype. In attack, in early sets get to ground as quickly as possible to gradually gain field position, then kicking to the corners back and forth until one time eeks out a yardage advantage, then block plays left and right in the attacking zone. Repeat.

It’s football that requires hours of offseason work to drill into players. Some teams/clubs just don’t have the willingness to do what is necessary to win consistently in today’s game. Teams like Penrith and Canterbury do, which makes them boring as hell to watch. Penrith have played the exact same way for 5 years.

Teams that play a slightly more expansive game using individual speed/skill like Canberra and Broncos can still win games, but they will get found out in finals.

The thing I found umm…unbelievable…is how Xerri was allowed back on the field. If the shoe had been on the other foot, I wonder if the Manly player would have been allowed to continue.

Perhaps another example of how closely the Dishlickers now resemble Penrith.

Although cheating has been in the former’s DNA since at least the time of that handsome fella😉, Bullfrog Moore.

Last week Simpkin was barely down for 5 seconds - cat 1.

Xerri stays down for almost 5 minutes - no problems Cat 2. Carry on.
