The best thing you will watch today

Gave so much for our club and his ability to change momentum single handily was amazing.

In all honesty i love the way he played, especially the hits in defence but the thing i will miss the most about him is his smile.

Thanks for everything Skivvy

All time most capped Manly centre
10th all time for games played
4th all time try scorer
1st all time hitman
Player Number 500

What I wouldn't give to have him back for another year or two. Love the Skivvy. Thanks for all the memories, what an absolute champion.

Really hope he can be there on Saturday

It's a shame injuries and perhaps some off field drama stopped him from going around again for one more year. He was always one of my favourites.

We'll always have 2008 and 2011

Manly have had some great centre pairings over the past 40+ years. Bozo and Branighan, Bozo and Frog Eyes, Snoz and Williams, Innes and Hill, Killer and Skivvy.

They all enjoyed great success and we won at least one premiership with each pair. But none lasted as long together as Killer and Skivvy.

Steve Matai was never the fastest centre. Even at his quickest the likes of James Roberts would leave him for dead in a foot race. But Skivvy's running game was based on power, not leg speed and he didn't need to be a player who could score a length of the field try. He had the strength to break tackles, but he was also good enough to be able to use his supports very well. Robbo and Jorge scored many tries because of lead up work inside of them by Skivvy. And then there was his defence. Our left edge with Skivvy and Jorge was arguably the most feared left edge in the NRL simply because of the hits they were capable of.

You know what I think one of the big things was that we loved so much about Skivvy? He would give his all out there. He could be bandaged up like an Egyptian mummy and he would still run and hit as hard as ever with no thought to self preservation.

I wish I could be there on Saturday to farewell the guys but I'll have to settle for watching it online instead.

C'mon Manly fans, this game (with what it means to our season) and these guys deserve nothing less than a full house on Saturday. Anything less than 20,000 would be a disappointment.

The work that Stevie did week in and week out made our team a force. His ruthless defense put the fear into opposition centers and the imposing and aggressive intent was a signature for Manlys play during our golden era. This club is all about his defense but he was a great hole runner and wingers who played outside him scored try after try. We had a lethal left edge in attack with Snake, Foran, Whatmough and Stevie, so potent and won so many games for us

Ahh the wonderful memories...still remember meeting him at a fans day at Brookie when he first came to Manly and Stevie was just a kid. To think he turned into such a special player....

Have always loved him and always will :inlove: with his awesome defence, clever sidestep, such a fearless and never-say-die attitude.

And the one game I have to miss at Brookie in yonks is this one 😡 To be honest though, I'm glad in some ways as I know if I see Steve on Brookie Oval for the last time I'll be an emotional mess @

Definitely one of my favourite Manly legends and thank you Stevie for all those wonderful memories :h:
