Steve Menzies will finally hang up the headgear, right? Well, perhaps not. Sin Bin can reveal ''Beaver'' could consider a shock comeback for his beloved Sea Eagles next year if the club is decimated by injuries.
Menzies, playing for Catalans Dragons, announced he will retire at the end of this Super League season, just two months shy of his 40th birthday. He will then return to Australia to take up an ambassadorial role with Manly.
However, he has raised the prospect of again donning the maroon and white by following in the footsteps of Ben Kennedy, who famously signed a $3 contract at the request of coach Des Hasler in 2007 as an insurance policy against injuries. It also raises the prospect of Menzies clocking up the seven games required to break Darren Lockyer's NRL appearance record of 355.
''I wouldn't do it for some record or just to run on,'' Menzies told Sin Bin from Perpignan. ''But if it was a similar scenario to when Ben Kennedy signed a $1 deal - Dessie said $1, BK demanded it be $3 and I think they met in the middle or something like that - and if something happened early in the season and they said, 'We might be in trouble, you need to start training', if the scenario ended up like that then I'd have to consider it.

''You couldn't just say, 'run onto the field for one minute' and then that's it. But if they really got lots of injuries and I signed up for a dollar, it would be all legit.
''At the back of your mind, you don't want to come back and embarrass yourself. But it would definitely get me thinking. It's for Manly, so I would have to consider it.''
All up, Menzies has played 469 games in the NRL and Super League, 20 Tests and represented Australia on 19 occasions. But nothing stands out more than his last game for Manly, where he scored a try in the 2008 grand final win over Melbourne.
Asked why he chose now to announce his retirement, the affable back-rower said: ''Because otherwise I'd keep playing forever.''
Regardless of whether he pulls on the boots for the Sea Eagles again, Menzies will be back at Manly next year. ''You can expect Beaver to be working at the Sea Eagles in some capacity, we're just finalising some details,'' Sea Eagles boss Dave Perry said. Whether he makes the transition to the clipboard brigade remains to be seen.
''Coaching? Probably not initially,'' Menzies said. ''There's a lot of knowledge in this head but whether I've got the temperament - I might be too relaxed to be a coach, you've got to be stressed out. But then again Dessie was quiet when he played. Now look at him.''
