That Elusive FG

A Field goal ends the game 5 to go.
The Manly team had a few chances, but took some bad options.
The fact they were getting tackled inside the 3-5 metres from the line allows the defence to take time away from the kicker.
They were never going to penalise them for offside, though they clearly were.
The FG play needs the attack to be just on or outside the 10m line, to maximise distance from defenders and give the kicker more time.
Poor execution and a huge part of the result.
Good point mate . We did take some wrong options .Towards the end when we were in front and the raiders kept on giving us the ball back on a silver plater we spilt the beans and lost the game .

With 5 to go I felt like we needed another try, not a field goal, to win the game.
Raiders are notorious for quick points and it felt like they would get enough opportunities to run us down regardless.

The field goal was the wrong play last night, whether he kicked it or not, imo.
Good point , A good kicking game to pin them down in their own in goal would have been suffice but we were inadequate in that department

Browns service from dummy seemed to be slow . The ball didnt smack the receiver at the right height on alot of occasions, and this is where i think we came undone with our execution. Api is a little general in the dummy half role and i think would have had Dce more so in the right position to take the shot. Dce would have known where to position himself more so if Api was dummyhalf is what im trying to say.

I see what you are saying; however, I actually thought we should have taken a field goal a set earlier than we did. If made, it lifts our team and puts pressure on the Raiders and they are notorious for crumbling under pressure.

We have to be one of the worst sides for setting up on field goals. Even the ones we get seem to be more good luck than good management. Been going on for years, I think the last time we looked composed on field goals was when Hodko was here the first time around. It's like we never practice it at the hundreds of hours of training we do in a season.
Exactly. Surely we should be training for this every week. Whos responsible. Hodko abd chez looked like they hadn't even spoke about who would take the field goal shots. Poor execution

Too many excuses Amongst this team on why we didn't. Matty Wright just went into hooker, no fuzz, no fan fare. Didn't even look out of place tackling forwards around the ruck. He just rolled the sleeves up and did a bloody great job. There is just no excuse, when we should have, but we didn't.

I actually watched the replay on nrl.com

I agree with cherrys attempt. Cherry was too far away from poo who cannot pass. Raiders were well off side as well.

We did actually set up the second shot for trent well. Right in front. He just unfortunately shanked it.

In contrast, Melbourne had practically no pressure on their kicker:

There are teams who are willing to roll the dice contesting field goals BECAUSE there is definitely wiggle room on how the rules are interpreted. Not saying this excuses our poor form in kicking them but F** me its getting frustrating to watch games when so many are now determined by field goals.

WOW ... have a look at those 2 photos ..... in both, the dummy half has the ball in hand at exactly the same position ..... however in one the defence has not yet moved a foot .... but in the other the defence has managed to get 2/3 metres off their line ....

Why is it so .....

Brown was a long way away from cherry and cannot pass. Needed to go one or two plays earlier and pass from 10-15m out.

The second set up was fine. Just missed it. On another day we kick it and win the match

What I was pointing out was the "jump" one of those teams had in getting off their line .....

This is what i was saying mate about Brown at rake , he didn't give the halves the service they needed. Im not blaming Brown entirely because he is not a hooker, but then Trent picks 3 forwards on the bench and a winger as backup. Wtf.

Wright was picked as the utility because we have no other options for that role - what other options for starting hooker and bench utility did we have ??

The thing that surprised me was how quickly Brown hit the wall physically and had to come off. He was gassed after about 30 minutes.

Cant help but feel how important that field goal would have been in context of the season.
Would have given us 3 wins on the trot against more fancied teams, kept us in the hunt for the 8, yet we lose the unlosable and back it up on Thursday night like a team defeated before kickoff..
That's our season..
