FORMER Newcastle chairman Robbie Tew says the prospect of the Knights losing their NRL licence if they don’t find a way forward financially is a “legitimate concern”.

Newcastle remains under the control of the NRL in the wake of Nathan Tinkler’s ill-fated tenure as club owner and Tew is part of the Our Knights, One Chance proposal to raise funds to support the long-term existence of the club.

The proposal, which was launched by a group of businessmen last weekend, involves making Newcastle a community-based club by selling shares at $500 each in a bid to raise $20 million.

They may have to fold them. There is/was still money on the Goldie, hence they could find a suitor and attract talent. Can't do either in Newcastle these days.

No chance NRL would allow them to leave.

Tigers, Roosters, Saints or Manly would be a whole different story.
If they could get one or even better two of those four to leave or relocated the NRL wouldn't care in the slightest.

Not sure that they would want Manly out, unless they're thinking through their a... because that would leave even a greater vacuum from the Bridge to Swansea. The loss of Norths and the failure to get Central Coast off the ground is killing League between the North shore and Newcastle

Wests Newcastle should take over. The mariners need to be forgotten. They could have been a new Broncos if this faction had been involved.

Until the Titans came on they had every player north to the border.

They have squandered chances with an inward thinking attitude and a lets go get Wayne and Kade Snowden mind frame.

Could have so easily had every nsw junior club north of Newcastle with a knights badge on one side of their jersey for a couple of footballs and a visit from a couple of first graders twice a year.

Duck them. Biggest waste ever.

That is the one advantage Manly has, that we are the only club in northern Sydney.

Of course, being the only professional national sports league club in northern Sydney also has its disadvantages. With no AFL threat, no union threat and the closest A-League side based out at Gosford, the NRL don't feel the need to protect the game there like they do in say, the western suburbs.....

Union dominates the northern suburbs Holden. Half the Sydney Union comp are north of the bridge. I suspect most of the schools play Union (mine did at Manly Boys High). Not that many League schools about I'm afraid - mainly private schools. The A League at one stage was considering Brookvale Oval as the base for one of their teams. If Sea Eagles disappeared, Union and soccer would quickly move in to replace them. As for Aussie Rules, its growing and growing in Sydney. A third Sydney team in the north, is quite probable.

Nice idea, but it's hard to see that sort of disposable income laying around the Newcastle region for 4000 of these to be picked up.

And $20mil doesn't go too far in the NRL, particularly if there is no further funding model to keep the dollars flowing.

Tew did some good things in keeping the Knights from losing everything in the event of Tinkler folding, but I'm afraid the region is in the long term doldrums financially and not much to look forward to in the future.
