I thought you automatically lost the 2 points for 14 on the field regardless of whether or not it had any impact on the result

Not automatic, depends on the involvement of the player concerned, and how long he was on for.
We won a game against the Dragons about 15-16 years and for a brief moment we had 14 on the field, no points loss just a warning
