Still think NRL Players are Overpaid?

The annual BRW rich list of Australia’s 50 highest paid sports stars has thrown up a number of surprises in 2012. There is not 1 bloody league player in the top 50 or even in the next tier of top 20 runner-up's who missed out on top fiddy honors.

Apples and oranges.

Check out the number of sportspeople earning their dollars overseas and within International competitions.

So let's measure up the like-for-like;

25. Gary Ablett - AFL
34. Tom Scully - AFL
36. Israel Folau - AFL
45. Chris Judd - AFL

Just Missed List - Nick Riewoldt (AFL), Karmichael Hunt (AFL) and Brett Emerton (A-League).

Of those guys, only Judd and Riewoldt are comparable as non-concessioned salaried players enjoying earnings completely within Australia.

The rest of the AFL players enjoyed significant boosts from their fledgling clubs cap concessions, and Emerton still enjoys income on the back of Socceroo appearances.

Considering the last 5 of the top 50 are listed on the same income would suggest that the just-missed list (and perhaps hundreds more, including our top League players), are on a level not that far below those named.

Remember the game is only really played in two states of Australia so you couldn't imagine them being paid huge dollars. Soccer and Union is global and GayFL is the major sport in Australia. AFL is extremely well run and has had major TV contracts for awhile where we are getting close to our first. Clubs like Collingwood are money machines whereas we hope we can break even.

I wonder what this list would look like if the IPL didn't exist. They throw some serious money at players.

Very good points, BRW should do a "playing within the Australian borders" version, pretty sure NRL would make up most of that list alongside AFL of course.

Grant Balfour Baseball is a closer and throws a baseball 14 times about 4 times a week. Not bad for 4 million.

What about Sav Rocca and Mat McBriar raking in the $$$ who spend no more than a few seconds on the field for each NFL game they play.

silvertail, very true!! News Limited and Nine has made sure League was paid a pittance. Only in 2014 will the league get what they should have been getting for past 5 years!! 😡

Realistically they are being payed a fair wage for the exposure they get. If the game was to become genuinely international they could expect more. At the moment I feel more should be channeled towards junior development. Without that there is no future. Starve the roots and the whole tree dies...
