Channel 7 reporting tonight that they have lost their new 7 signing Fogerty for 6 months. It is a knee and did it in trial against us.

Can you feel sorry for Ricky? Maybe just a little but not upset to see a middle table club cop a set back.

I feel real sorry for Fogarty and a bit for the Raiders, as the season hasn't even started. They've had no luck with their spine in recent years and I thought they got a good buy in Fogarty and would at least make the 8. Highly unlikely now.

I see a bad moon rising…

Pretty big injury toll across both clubs for a trial but it's a contact sport and injuries can happen at any stage. Apparently he did his knee during the warm-up and played through it.

Interested to see hoe Brad Schneider goes..

If I recall correctly we were once linked to him???

What exactly did the two trial matches show us that we didn't already know?
It cost us up to four starters from our potentially top 17 for round one.
I knew Koala and Saab were fast; Jurbo was a good tackler . . . .
I question the need for our top players to gain fitness in such meaningless contests. By all means give the players who are trying to push through the grades a chance, newbies such as Bully, and those who wanted to test out their injury recoveries. But is the toll from such trials worth the risk?

Where are the calls for Gosford to be banned for all future games?

Imagine if it was Brookie Oval.

Agree, we had a perfect first up trial against the Tig-pies, everyone on song, the points were flowing no injuries. Come the 2nd trial, I thought to myself mmm...the Raiders, we usually have ferocious encounters against each other, no way will the Raiders be treating this as a trial, it's full on to them. Notice they kept on there 1st grade players for the majority of the two halves. We came out licking our wounds with 4 injuries to there 1, given it was a major one though. Something for Des to ponder over next time...

I think disappointment is natural where injuries are concerned, but it's the nature of the game. It happens to all clubs at varying degrees over the course of many seasons. The Roosters are the most cashed up club in the league and no amount of conditioning and sports science could prevent their disastrous injuries last year.

Apart from 4 of our players, the remainder of our squad benefited from the recent trials. They were given a chance to dust off the cobwebs and hit the ground running against Penrith. Therefore, the trials were worth it. Avoiding conditioning 20+ players to avoid injury to 3-4, when they could come out and get injured in Rd.1 anyway, is not logical. As disappointing as it is, that's footy. I suspect the coaches agree, or they probably wouldn't have used the best players the last couple of weeks.

As much as players train these days you can't simulate contact or decision making under fatigue in a game scenario. Wins and losses mean nothing but dipping a toe into hot water is always preferable to jumping in face first.

I believe they are called "trials" in order to trial new players. To 'trial' players with 200-plus NRL experience is illogical.
If the idea is simply to get them fit then why weren't players given the full 80 minutes? Or play in both trials?
DESpicable (and other coaches) tried to hedge their bets, knowing how disastrous injuries to top 17 players would be in matches that were meaningless.

It's not to get them fit, it's to simulate game day conditions.

There's fitness and there's match fitness. I think you do need to give your first team a run in the trials. If you don't you risk injury in the first few weeks where the speed and intensity goes up again. Coming straight off the training paddock to that is asking for trouble. Let lone the lack of cohesion potentially costing valuable points

That said, I was surprised to see the key starters playing most of the second trial after such a good run in the first half against the Tigers.

Des has knack of getting us to fire at the right time.

The thing is it's a necessary evil, as without the trial which is "legitimate full contact" preparation for the season proper, the injuries across every team may be far higher numbers, plus potentially more serious.
I mean hitting the gum, running around doing drills and laps and even team contact, is a massive jump to play the rigorously tough, break neck pace of those first early season games....the trial is the somewhere in between that really benefits players come R1 of the NRL

Heck Mosto, I may as well not posted....you had exactly the same theory, anyways mate I hit the button now

That’s sad news for Jamal. I’ve met and talked to him a cpl of times when he was playing QCup for Burleigh. Top bloke. Great leader. And tuff as they come. Hopefully he’ll be back sooner rather than later.
